Mosport tragedy ??
Wife was watching the news tonight and heard something about police investigating a death at Mosport today. I checked the web site and noticed it was VARAC weekend (vintage racing). Some of the cars were likely Vintage Porsches. I know my last instructor mentioned that Varac is popular among some porsche guys. I hope no one we know was involved. Anyone have anything on this tonight. I'm sure more will come out tomorrow.

Wow, that really sucks. If I'm not mistaken, that's only the second ever fatality in Mosport's history, the first one being before the track was resurfaced and widened for ALMS.
Something for us all to keep in mind as we try to squeeze that extra half-second out of our laptimes...

Also, I'm certain several motorcyclists have left us on that track as well, there is just no margin for error at the speeds that track generates.

Hmm, seems I was mistaken. When I first started track driving and looked into such things, I only found one mention of a fatality - I think it was that 962 one. Maybe that's the stat for competitive racing? Oh well, even more to keep in mind.

When I was researching Mosport, I found an article that said there had been 17 fatalities there. Didn't Manfred Winkelhok die in a 962 at Mosport? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manfred_Winkelhock

Unfortunate Mishap
It was an unfortunate mishap at Mosport this past weekend.
The American Can Am owner driver was on the back straight when a body panel from his car came off, drove over it and sent the car flying into the guardrail, destroying the car and killed the driver.

That's very sad.
I happen to have some pictures of that car from last year, also at Mosport (I did not take these, another guy did, but he shared them with me and I was particularly excited by this car, being one driven by Villeneuve).

Dino Crescentini was a very likable guy always very friendly and sociable in the pits. he rode a Can Am motorcycle around saying hi to everyone and helping out whenever he saw an opportunity. he was at the races for the social aspect, even though he was a very good and competitive driver. We raced in the same group and he will be missed.
