I'm a little slow, how does the airbox blowup? I have an idea in my head but I'm not sure...

Well Brad the CIS cars cars are very finikey. They were the first real forey into mechanical type fuel injection. There were no sensors to lean out fuel ( management ) . it depended largely on mechanical adjustments to fuel pressure etc. Given that, the AFR is critical , and even radical changes in teperature can ause backfires.

Blowing the air box is basically a backfire through the intake manifold.

The CIS cars use a plastic intake manifold ( the air box ) fastened to alluminum runners that atach to the heads.

I nm ycase I gave it special treatment , My service manual was misprinted and had me hook up the ignition wires wrong. So I was dumping in fuel into the intake without igniting it. Definitely a bad AFR .

then it eventually lit , and the rest (along with the airbox ) is history ..

oh well . life goes on .. check out my thread in the 911 forum for mre details, there is one about ' it's all over " and the other one about "flash bang .

Clive,

I still have that spare 5.0L 928 engine sitting in my garage.....Now is the time to see if we can try to shoehorn it into your 911!

Clive, this $ucks bud ! If it happened before Hershey you could have maybe pick one up while you were down there.

Why not make a Want to Buy (WB) post on the UCR web site to see some one has one for sale.... it could hurt.

I just read some of the post on the 911 forum... it appears Porsche made the air box to work like a "fuse" in the case of a major intake backfire the air box would pop instead of something else. Good luck bud... .
