Default Exemption for smog testing.

I know when it was first introduced in Ontario cars 15 years or older were exempt but I am not sure if it a rolling 15 years.
Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks

My 1982 VW Golf cabrio was exempt from testing this summer when I put it back on the road for my daughter. A safety check was all that was needed.

It's 20 years, not 15, and yes, it's rolling. If I'm not mistaken, they go by model year, so currently anything MY1986 and older is exempt.

Mine is ..... 1986 .... don't know if you have to get one when you change owners. If you are the original before the 20 years ... you were exempt!

The 20-year rule applies to any title transfer, it's emissions exempt. Safety is never exempt. When I bought my 72 911 in 2004 I had to have a safety, no e-test.

Hey Ice,

The rolling exemption is for 20 year old cars, but according to the website, they are stopping it at MY 1987. So a MY 1988 car stays in the system beyond 2008.

Drive Clean is Ontario's testing and repair program, designed to cut smog-causing emissions from cars, trucks and buses. Currently, the program requires light-duty vehicles that are at least three years old to be tested every two years to renew their licence plates. Light-duty vehicles that are 20 years old or more are exempt from testing. A recent science-based review recommended that the program be improved by exempting newer vehicles and focusing more strongly on older vehicles that are most likely to pollute.

Effective January 1, 2006, the program is being revised to focus on vehicles most likely to pollute by:

- Starting emissions tests to renew licence plates when vehicles are five years old, instead of three, because newer vehicles have much better emissions controls and three-year-old cars pass Drive Clean over 99 per cent of the time. Heavy-duty trucks and buses will also require tests beginning when they are five years old, instead of three
- Strengthening consumer protection and fraud prevention by making it an offence under the Environmental Protection Act to create, distribute or use false Drive Clean passes and making it easier to decertify emissions inspectors who create, distribute or use false Drive Clean passes
- As well, 20-year-old light-duty vehicles, which have a high risk of being serious polluters, will now require testing, with 1988 and newer model year vehicles staying in the program.

from Drive Clean

Ian

And mine is exempt

Also to note: it is only applicable in certain parts of Ontario. If you live outside of the major city centers you might be completely exempt.

Hmm. When I registered my '82 and it was already past the 20 year exemption, I still needed to get a drive clean. They said I need to get at least one pass.

My 87 BMW doesn't require testing anymore and I just bought an 07 and my mechanic told me that anything 07 onwards will not have to be tested as they are phasing out the testing all together.
