I will tell you what happened in one of the GTGs.
I managed to keep the car... almost didn't, because they wanted "evidence".

I'm buying a 2001 Boxster S from Chicago. Unfortunately Port Huron is no longer open 24/7 for vehicle exports... I'll be crossing on a Saturday, so will have to use the detroit ambassador bridge location.

On a related issue, when I did my import last year, I seem to recall a border official's advice that you could import a car at any border crossing, provided the U.S. office at the same crossing has been pre-notified. Is this correct?

Here's a great page with a brief summary of each border crossing, the contact numbers and border-specific instructions. Some crossings take a fax copy of the Title, others want the original.

+1 on properly documenting the purchase transaction and proof of the price in a bill of sale. Trust me.

+1

My car came across at that crossing.
I didn't bring the car across myself, but the truck it was on crossed at 11:00 at night.

Lewiston Bridge was the best when Imported last year because U.S. customs accepted a fax of the documents (title, etc.), whereas most others require the original 3 business ahead

Detroit also accepts faxes of the title , 72h's before crossing. I called Port Huron again, and the US side says they only do exports during certain times..... (June 2009)

Just a caution - BMW requires that the recall cert and RIV inspection be done by them. They will want you to change out the instrument display for about $3K (the US cars have day time running lights as a selectable option)
