Default Car Import - Which border crossing is best?

Lads,

Potential new DailyDriver.
Fly into Marietta, Georgia.
Drive home to Toronto. (About 16 hrs)

Which border crossing is best to import vehicles?

GoogleMaps shortest distance yields Ambassador Bridge (never been).
An extra hour gives me Peace Bridge (I have been and it was efficient).

Grateful for your opinions...

Unless things have changed since my last import, Queenston/Lewiston is the ONLY border crossing that will permit permanent export of cars. You can only export a vehicle during regular business hours, M-F I believe 8:30-4:30, but I could be wrong on the hours. They will turn you back if you turn up outside those hours.

ambassador bridge at the Windsor/Detroit border is a nightmare. It's the busiest port of entry and it's always jammed up with hundreds of trucks. If you're gonna cross there, take the tunnel...it's hardly ever busy on the CDN side.

Default Info for Lewiston

Lewiston Bridge (U.S.) info:

716-282-1400
(press "1" to speak with the warehouse officer)
(press "3" for vehicle import/export info)

fax # to send title:
716-285-3565
(make sure you re-write the VIN# in dark marker on
a copy of the title that you are sending to make sure it
is legible to them)

Send this copy of title to them 72 hrs before you arrive @ border.
Stories vary about this 72hr requirement. I just called and spoke
with the warehouse officer ... he said if you arrive before 72hrs,
you cannot proceed. Ofcourse he HAS to say that, so take your
chances i suppose.
Note: needless to say, you must have the ORIGINAL title with
you at the border.

Hours to cross:
M-F 8am to 4pm

That's what i have for Lewiston... i dunno about the others.... hope this
is helpful to anybody, or ME when I need to find this info again!

Personally I'd avoid Windsor, unless you can be sure of getting there way off peak hours. A better bet would be Port Huron/Sarnia. Also once across the border it's a straight shot to Toronto.

Not exactly true.

I recommend the Port Huron/Sarnia border. It avoids detroit. It's 24/7 for vehicle export. And you can just fax your title 3 days ahead of time. When I crossed there at 2am on a weekday there was absolutely no line whatsoever.

I did alot of looking, and this one is about 5k below U.S. market, and
about 13K below CDN mkt value.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB....cWAT.m240.lVI

wanted a 2007, this is a 2006, but only 17.9K miles, 1-owner, premium & sport package, ellipsoid 18", etc $31.9K

Nice, good choice! We almost bought one too but eventually went with Audi. I must admit that I have never been a big BMW fan but I was impressed with the 3-serie.

I also used Lewiston.
Don't lie about the amount on the bill of sale to save on taxes... don't ask me how I know.
They will arrest you on the spot.
