Default Purchasing new in US

I've been told that US dealers can only order cars that must be reg'd in the US.

Can someone walk me thru the logistics of a Canadian resident factory ordering a new car from a US dealer intended for Canadian registration? Tax implications etc.

Thanks in advance.

I don't think You can buy new, the car has to be used.....

Anyways, with all the stories we ear about Canadian dealers no wanting to work on American cars or even honor the warranty, I would really ask my local dealer first or think twice.

Personnaly I would and will do it again but then again, I'm not in the market for cars with left over warranty.

Pretty much all auto companies ban such practices especially so at border towns for obvious reasons.

I know up here, Toyota would not sell a car if it is getting exported. It would first need to be registered in Ontario and then they have no saying where it goes but by then, the car is not brand new. If you go that route, getting warranty work might be where they can get back to you by making it a real PITA.

Why would someone do this anyway? There is no money to be saved and Porsches in Canada are cheaper than the same car in the USA.

Yeah by a WIDE margin too. Prob ~20% at current fx, before duty.

back in 2006 some things were different.
btw. I don't think they get away with denying warranty. I believe, when you have warranty on a car sold in NA the warranty works all over NA. At one time they tried to charge an inspection fee but I think that was found to be unfair and maybe even illegal, so it stopped.

What Porsche used to do was make it difficult to get parts to convert your US car to Cdn spec required for import and they’d withhold that recall clearance letter unless you did the work through them. So unless you were crafty, it resulted in many having to bring their imported US cars to the Cdn dealer for the conversion, and they FLEECED you the absolute best they could, and they bundled that with the safety, and they FLEECED you as much as they could there too. In the end that destroyed much of the savings (at the time) from import.

I imported a 996TT which, thankfully entrepreneurial people had created solutions for things like daytime running lights that allowed me to avoid the dealer and I was able to ask a friend at a US dealer to print out my recall clearance letter. This allowed me to import reasonably. That was 2011 and perhaps things have changed - but it was terrible of Porsche then.

The exchange rate between the CAD$ and the US$ today is at least 40% and even if you brought it down to a more reasonable 34% where it was before the madness started a few months ago, then I fail to see why someone would want to buy a new Porsche in the USA to bring it to Canada.

From both the Canadian and USA's official Porsche web sites here are the prices to some of the models available in both countries.

Cayman 718S = $69,000 USD in the USA and $79,300 CAD in Canada which represents only +13.5% more expensive to buy here.

Cayman 718 GT4 = $99,200 USD in the USA and $113,800 CAD in Canada which represents only +14% more expensive to buy here.

New 911 Carrera = $97,400 USD in the USA and $113,000 CAD in Canada which represents only +16% more expensive to buy here.

New 911 Carrera S = $120,600 USD in the USA and $131,200 CAD in Canada which represents only +9% more expensive to buy here.

New 911 Turbo S = $203,500 USD in the USA and $231,700 CAD in Canada which represents only +13.5% more expensive to buy here.

Taycan 4S = $108,300 USD in the USA and $119,400 CAD in Canada which represents only +15% more expensive to buy here.

Macan GTS = $71,300 USD in the USA and $77,100 CAD in Canada which represents only +8% more expensive to buy here.

Strange how the new 911 Carrera S cost only 9% more and the Macan only 8% more than their US counterparts while the rest of the cars here average out at only 14% more.

So yes in Canada we probably pay the lowest prices for Porsches in the world. We pay on average at least 25% less then the Americans for the same cars at today's exchange rate.

Porsche has used a 25% fx rate for years between Canada and US pricing. So when FX is 4X% like it is now, cars are way cheaper in Canada when purchased with US dollars and the opposite happens when the actual FX is lower than 25%.

Not a Porsche, but we had a US-imported Toyota and required some warranty work and recalls done. Originally, the Toyota dealers in Vancouver didn't know what to do with our car, and asked us to go back across the border to Bellingham, WA to get the work done. We spoke to Toyota USA and they sorted things out with Toyota Canada, and never had to step foot back in to the US for any kind of work. After that, the dealers welcomed us with open arms.

Currently our exchange rate really sucks. About 40% +/-. $70k US is $98K CAD today.
Also keep in mind, 6% duty at customs for German cars, 5% GST when crossing the border and then 8% PST when plating in Ontario.

Yep, has been the case for a while and even more so lately with the CAD cratering. Certainly a benefit of Porsche AG pricing to the local market vs through the lens of the USD...

I think their is another 2.1% in there as well as air conditioning charge. unless the car is more than 25 years old then just hst.
