Default oil for 911

Hi Guys

The usual discussion is on about oil and how crap the castrol GTX is on the 911 forum. Many of the oils discussed are just not avalable here. I have stated "crap" now in my car and am due for a change, just wondering what you guys are using. PS I am not and do not intend to run synthetic, don't want to start another debate so if the Dino' guys can chime in that would be great.

Thanks guys

Hey Clive.........Looks like you made it home OK..........this is the oil I use. Porsche recommends a 20w 50 viscosity so Valvoline is my choice..........Bill

I am interested in this topic as well. I have never heard that about castrol before. And you are right iceman, there isn't alot of choice in the north for non-synthetics.

My mechanic uses Quaker State 20W-50 dino oil in 911 engines unless the owner supplies something else (I use Mobil-1 15-50). FWIW, he works almost exclusively on pre-1990 911's (and 356's) and is known as the 911 engine builder to go to in the area.

Oh, and on a related note, it appears that Mobil-1 had dropped the 15-50 for Canada, replacing it with a 5W-50. http://www.mobil.com/Canada-English/...es/Mobil_1.asp no longer lists the 15-50, and my local CdnTire only has the 5W-50.

I too, am interested in this Castrol GTX bashing. I always thought the consensus was positive if you've always run dino. And if you're changing every 3K to 4K does it really make a huge difference as long as it is a premium oil & the right weight?

Hmmm. The more you read, the more confused you get when it comes to oil. ice is right, Pete Z & Steve from Rennsport etc give a thumbs down to Castrol GTX. Many guys use it though. And The Oil Bible rating is a miserable 625 in 20w50. Hmmm.

Everybody does admit that with 3K oil changes, any quality oil (GTX included) will do.

I've run Castrol on all of my cars for many years without a single engine problem.
Switched to Quaker for a short time but found my Toyota burnt up more Quaker than Castrol so I switched back.
Can't go wrong with the price.
911 and BMW get Mobil 1 though.
