Pierre, just for curiosity: are some modifications required (daytime running lights, baby seat anchors,...) in order to register the car?
Also, how much Duty and Taxes (in percentage) and Customs brokerage did you end up paying?
Last but not least, did Customs use the price you paid as a calculation basis for the Dutyt & Taxes or did they come up with their own "wholesale value"?
Thanks

Maybe I can help you on this since I just finished importing my RSA.

At the border you'll pay:
-RIV fee + 100$ (air con.) if car is less then 15 years
-GST (7%) on book value if less then 10 years or bill of sale if more
-Duty (6.25%)

If car was less then 15 years old, you will have to pass federal inspection. If more, you'll just have to pass provincial inspection. Once inspections are done, you will pay PST at the registration office.

Good luck!!

Daytime running light are required but the Canadian Tire guys (who are mandated for the inspection) dont seems too picky... worst case, you need a little bypass (easy mod).

CWay27 is correct except that Duty is 6.1% (not a big difference tough...)

Hello:

Just wondering did you use the book value or the value of the purchase. Seems if they used book value you would be charged less taxes and duty?

Question: Do they evev ask to produce evidence that the car was purchased for the price on the bill of sale. ie: bank drafts, phone seller etc.

Thanks

I don't know about you Pierre but I got asked for every possible paperwork and tried to call P.O. twice but couldn't reach him (he was on a plane). Get all your paperwork together and be ready for alot of questions.

In the end its their word against yours and the sad part is, they argue on something they don't know crap about.

Well, the broker that I used for the transaction is also a VW car dealer. They actually bought the car for me (and we rolled my 95 Carrera in the deal). So I used a Quebec Temp Licence from Kansas City to Quebec. I was arrested twice... (one ticket @&%!, one nice cop...) and they were fine with the Temporary Licence plate.

At the border, the broker form Affiliated did all the nego job, responding to the Customs questions and sometimes asking me for some details. I had to show the purchasing contract but since we did not played with number (and the price I paid for this pristine car is on the high side), they did not challenge the selling price at all.

I'm going to Vegas next month....I'm going to start inquiring about the process before I leave. I want a low mileage 993 Cabriolet....(hey, that's what you just had!)

I'm only there for 3 days, but one of those days is going to be spent looking for my next p-car. The selection in my city sucks....plus I can probably save a few bucks at the same time. With our dollar floating around 90 cents, it's not so painful anymore to import them up.
