I think i might have asked this before but in any case i forgot.
how are duties calculated?
is it just GST on the total value of goods in USD (or do they convert it to canadian and then charge based on that).
basically i've ordered like 1770$ orth of parts from the states and in canadian that comes upto like 2100. if they charge me the full 15% tax on that its basically not even worth the trouble of bringing it in from the states, i might as well just get them from the dealer.

They will convert to Canadian then apply the applicable taxes....Don't confuse Duty with GST or PST, it's a seperate tax....On auto parts, only parts made in the US are exempt from Duties...
So you could possibly end up paying 22% in total taxes 7% GST, 8% PST and 7% Duty....
The 7% duty is based on what I paid on some Dunlop tires I got from Tirerack...
Add that to brokerage and shipping and it all adds up real fast...

To all Renboys up here in Canuckistan... Best place to order parts as far as price goes is from Sunset Imports in Beaverton Oregon.
Remember when you buy locally you also have to pay GST & PST
Draw back is they dont take Credit Cards, you need to send them the money first or make arrangements with your broker to have acashiers cheque at the border.
Good luck

I buy almost all my parts from Parts Heaven (used and new general parts) and Engine Builders Supply (EBS).
I don't seem to pay duty on parts anymore. not sure why, but as recently as March, I brought about $CDN 1,700.00 in parts through Ft. Erie after having them delivered to a friend in Buffalo. Paid only GST/PST.
If what you pay in the US for parts isn;t a lot less, you are not buying at the right places.
Just one example: a complete gasket set for my 2.7 einge at Pfaff is >$CDN 800.00. From EBS it is $CDN 480.00. That's about $CDN 550 with GST/PST. That way beats $800.00 according to my math. Maybe dealer prices have changed, but I'd be surprised.
Depending on where you live, you can save brokerage by using on of many Bufflao or Niagara falls NY mail dorps and driving it back yourself. If you go through Buffalo, you can have lunch at The Anchor Bar, ground zero for Buffalo wings. They are that good.
