Where there are no posted speed limits, the maximum speed is 50 km/h in cities, towns and villages, and 80 km/h elsewhere.

My understanding of this, is that the speed limit needs to be posted if it is not 50. Therefore, if you are travelling along a stretch of road that is 40 and you pass through an intersection, it becomes 50 unless there is a posted sign. If however, the intersection does not allow traffic to flow onto the roadway that you are on, then, no posting is necessary since no new vehicles would enter the roadway and the speed limit remains in force. When travelling in the city, you will notice just about every block has a sign when the speed limit is lower than 50.

Interestingly, in my rural municipality at the cottage they have signs that the maximum is 60 where not posted. There are ways to enter the roadway through public, secondary dirt roads where you may never see the municipal over riding sign. Always thought that would be a defence when charged over 60 in a rural area.

Oh, so you support the absurd war on speed and the taxation it causes?

If the speed limit were still 50km/h like was fine for likely decades, no police officer is going to pull you for doing 2km/h over that. The lower limit is a political sign, not an actual change in the safe travel speeds.

Semi tinted bubble license plates gents ... Have them on all my cars for five yrs now and no more 8kmh over tickets in the mail .. only pulled over once and given a warning because it was really dirty from the snow and salt . I do my best to mind the speed limits and respect the roads but the city has gotten way too stupid with with the speed limits, When I am on a major road and an E-bike or a scooter can blow by me 20 over the limit with no care in the world something is wrong ? I will take the fine any day for a obstructed plate every five years than a dozen tickets a year for going a few km's over.

I would understand if its a school zone but its probably the most ridiculous spot in Toronto. It was on Parkside where there are no side walks or crossing zones in that are. If you are in the road on foot then you are jay walking which is always the case there. They need more crossing spots for pedestrians not to reduce the limit from 50-40km.

They added the camera after the drunk dude rear ended another car while doing well over 100km/h in the 50/40 zone. I dont think changing the speed limit would stop him from getting drunk.

Yet another reason I'm glad I live in 'country bumpkin-ville'. Some good driving roads within 20 mins from the house and if you're going to get dinged for speeding it's the old fashioned way and it won't be for 12km/h over :-) That being said it took me almost 2 hours the other week to get from York St. home as there were 2 accidents on the DVP northbound, although I'm only in the big city once every 2 or 3 weeks.
