Default Picking car up from another dealer, is it possible?

My car just arrived today in Halifax.

It is due to arrive in Montreal at my local dealer for early September.

Because I am trying to avoid the luxury tax, I've asked if they can register the car to me before actually receiving it, or if it's possible that I pick the car up from Halifax Porsche and drive it back (i'll make it a little road trip at the same time).

Does anyone know how feasible either options are? I've sent my SA an email, just waiting for an answer.

Another member has already suggested option 1 to me. Wanted to see if anyone has actual experience with either case.

I am guessing it is easier logistically for your home dealer to have you pay and finish the transaction once they are invoiced by Porsche.

You are looking at one dealer’s cooperation instead of two.

And I am also guessing Halifax dealer doesn’t want to start this. Otherwise they will have a whole lot of cars they will be stuck with doing PDI.

I would be surprised if this were doable. I've had one experience with Halifax Porsche and it was poor. All I wanted to do was buy a rear wiper blade for my Macan. This took about 30 minutes. There was no one manning the parts booth so they needed to find him. Took him about 15 minutes to find the part. Sales staff were indifferent and uncommunicative (which is really crazy since this is the Maritimes). The whole time I was there, they acted like they were doing me a favour by buying a part from them.

OTOH, if you can swing this, the drive from Halifax to Edmunston is stunningly beautiful, light on traffic and not really policed for speed. 130-140km is the norm in the passing lane. But once you get to Riviere du Loup the Surete will be watching. And there is also the joy of passing through a town named St-Louis du Ha!Ha!.

When did you order this car/sign the initial paperwork?

put my deposit down in November 2021. Got the allocation call in late March 2022. Freeze date was sometime in April.

This is straight off CRA website update for August 2022:

"The luxury tax will not apply to the sale of a subject vehicle priced above the price threshold where a purchaser and a vendor have entered into a written agreement for the sale of the subject vehicle before 2022 in the course of the vendor’s business of selling subject vehicles."

I'm in the same boat with my car expected in September. I am still trying to sort out with my dealer because they will ultimately be responsible for charging or not charging the LT.

But - this is the same language when the legislation was released in April 2021 - only at that time you were exempt if you had agreement prior to April 2021 - now that timeline has been extended to include all of 2021.

You SHOULD be exempt from this tax if you purchased anytime before Jan2022 - but I still have as yet to confirm with my dealer and they honestly do not know either.

I had also asked my dealer about 1.5 weeks ago and they haven't even received guidelines themselves. So, to your point, they don't even know.
The variable is what constitutes a written agreement. Some say a deposit is not considered a written agreement. Then again, there was no other way as they have no inventory.
It's just so frustrating because nothing is clear.

Correct the dealers still don't have the specifics - but when I review my sales agreement from 2021 I don't know what else would constitute a 'written agreement' - I have a document that outlines the vehicle configuration, price, deposit, it is signed by me and the dealer and is legal and binding.

It includes this statement:
SALES FINAL Please review the entire contract, including all attached statements, before signing. This contract is final and binding once you have signed it unless the motor vehicle dealer has failed to comply with certain legal obligations.

Not going to happen.

you would also have to get the car inspected in Quebec and reclaim the taxes back from NS on the purchase

I would hazzard to guess that a deposit without any binding or quasi binding associated agreement with respect to the car will in all likelihood not meet the test for a "written agreement".

Honestly, my Dealer is still completely unsure on the implementation of the Lux Tax as well and its the Canadian Corporate location. There is also a million other questions I have like if you're Tax exempt are you LUX tax exempt? or what constitutes a Formal Written agreement? ( I have a sales agreement from November 2022 when the Allocation was assigned, but then changes were made prior to Lock in 2022 so what effect does that have?)

My GT4 arrived on the Supreme Ace on the 8th with expected delivery to the Dealer on the 27th, so hoping everything stays on target. I still cannot get a straight answer if the car comes by rail or by Enclosed truck from Halifax. I've heard from many on here and FB groups it comes by Truck but on the other hand my SA seemed to think it was coming by train into concord then trucked from there but was uncertain.

On a side note My Porsche finally updated to Stage 4, 21 days after the Car left EMDEN LOL. The video with the update adds more confusion as it suggests the car comes by Truck as well... so who knows
