Default WTB: 2015-2019 Porsche Cayenne V6, gas, diesel or hybrid

Hello, like the title looking to swap out family rig to a Cayenne.
Family fits in the 944, but unfortunately not big enough for bikes, soccer, hockey, paddle boards and whatever else were into that week.
We’ve had Cadillacs (SRX aged out. Escalade ESV too big) now have a Traverse Premiere Red Line, it’s ok v6, and three rows) but the luxe isn’t there for the price. was looking at Cadillac XT6 (which essentially the same car but with different badging)
so wanted something else. Plus down sizing on costs would be a bonus with out current situation right now.
used BMW X5 and Audi Q5’s we’re on this list along with a quick look at a Merc Gl350 diesel.
last year we test drove a 16 cayenne hybrid and loved it, but it died and they had to come tow it back to Porsche Edmonton. Then drove a 14 (v6 gas) but the transfer case was shot… it was replaced by Porsche after we idea it for them, but that soured the cayenne a bit for us.
Now the love is back and wish we had bought the 16 hybrid.
what’s the pros / cons for this model.
I do like the 16 and up as the body style got a bit sleeker than the 14/15 IMO
Any issues with any certain years or models?
any good places to check for a good used cayenne, preferably white, with either beige or black interior
hoping for a local to Alberta (Edmonton) but willing to travel for the right one. Under 40$ and 100k km unless diesel then we’d bump up the km a bit

thanks in advance!
Dan

I have a 15 Touareg TDI. Hands down it is my all time favourite daily driver. I was gonna get a Cayenne version for almost the same money but did not want to deal with the overpriced service and parts.

Most 15’s will have dieselgate warranty to 193k or 2025.

On any diesel you need to confirm records for things like fuel filter changes every 30k. If not run away fast as a failure of the HPFP can cost close to 10k. Also you will want to confirm the DPF ash load. If high and low Km’s again walk away.

Good luck on your search

Hi Dan. The 2019 is the year that Porsche updated the chassis of the Cayenne, so there's a price jump there and a big gain in range and functionality, safety, etc. I have a 2022 e-hybrid and I love it for my family with 2 little kids in car seats. We also have a 2008 VW touareg which we planned on replacing, but instead decided to keep it. Have a look at some 2015 Touaregs as they come out of the same factory as the Cayennes, but with slightly less flashy bodywork. There are some examples in the sub $40K price range that look great. Also I'm deep into 944s as well! I haven't been out much this year except to the track with a red 944 n/a, but I think I've got the only SilverRose 951S locally and of course the yellow race car in the avatar.

Awesome advise thanks! Will definitely look into the records on any, but yes diesel do require a bit more timely servicing.
good looking Touareg! Might have to keep an open mind for those too, but then I think we’d lean to the Atlas for the extra booty room

Good looking fleet! Love that Cayenne!
and of course a couple nine44’s
my 84-½ has been in the family since new, mum finally gave it up for something newer!
ya I’m think 19 and up will be out of range for us now. But love the new body style!
again, thanks for the Touareg info, will look at some Veedubs to keep an open mind, but it’s for the wife so the badging might come into play despite them being the same powerplants

To be quite honest why even bother with any of the above mentioned vehicles ... Just go to a full electric vehicle of your choice and be done with the oil , fuel & maintenance costs. altogether.

I am fortunate to have several cars and SUV's and although I love my Cayenne S ,and would never give up my 911 , for daily driving and family road trips my Tesla is always my go to. It really is a no brainer as a DD .... The highway acceleration is just wonderful and the extra 15min charging up on road trips is worth all the benefits electric vehicles offer and daily stop and go commuting is great with it not to mention the $140 weekly donation to Saudi Arabia I no longer have contribute to.

I still am a hard core petrol head at heart but for day to day practicality you can't beat an electric vehicle .

What do you suggest? Remember the $40k budget and need for SUV. If you can find one, I'd be in the market for this too.

We've had two cousins of the Cayenne - q7 TDI . A 2011 - returned under dieselgate with 225K km on it... no major issues. and then replaced it with a 2015 q7 TDI that now has 195+K km on it... I believe both were tuned with Malone software.

No powertrain issues on the 15 q7 TDI.

of the cars mentioned and your use and budget, I would only look at Q5. much better on gas, and maintenance. touareg and cayenne are very heavy and bad on gas, brakes and tires, not to even mention valve body transmission problems or electical, or all of the bore scoring that is present on those engines...even the VR6!

I heard most of that too before I got the Treg. 60k later I do not see any excessive tire or brake wear. Fuel economy with the TDI is awesome for its weight. Combined heavy right foot driving and I average 9-10l per 100k. Out on a long cruise it will get down to 7l easily.

The later 8spd autos do not have any of the issues that the 6spds had. But the lifetime fluids should be changed IMO. As should both Diffs and the transfer case as they are known to be under filled from the factory.

But yes, all gas versions are pigs due to the 5300lb curb weight.

For towing there is not much out there that can come close to a cayenne, Q7 or Touareg diesel. I looked at the Atlas briefly but it is a **** tow vehicle and really not anywhere near the level of a Touareg.

OEM tires were known to be worn out in 20-30k or even less, there are many threads on the inter webs about this particular issue.

For me towing was a major factor in my decision. If you are not towing then I agree that something like the Q5 is a good option. But you are also into premium gas. Too bad we are not getting that many Diesels in North America these days.

Now that mine is off warranty I plan on doing the DPF/SCR/EGR Delete and a Malone tune. Power jumps up considerably and fuel economy is also increased.

You may want to consider adding GLE350d to the mix too. It just got extended emissions warranty.

The Benz units do get better mileage than the 3.0 VW/Audi Diesels.
