Key cutting and Fob Question

Key cutting and Fob Question
Looking to get a key cut as pictured here - 996.
Not sure if this is strictly a dealer thing as the cut looks to be like it's made by a "miniature router" which makes me think any good locksmith shop should be able to do.
As you can see, the original key is in bad shape, and I plan to transfer the buttons circuit board as well as the small cylindrical passive device (don't know what it's called), into the replacement FOB.
On that note, the original FOB does not work the car locks, so I am locking the door the old fashioned way for now. I only have the one key/fob and of course I would like to get a back up, but I've heard getting old FOB's to work or adding new FOB's is strictly a dealer project, and can be expensive $$.
Any experience/insight you have on key cutting and FOB's would be appreciated...
Thanks

Call a locksmith that specialises in car keys most are mobile and will be able to cut/program the key. A new key at the dealer is doable but iirc they either need to order it from Germany or connect to the database to program it. My local locksmith charges around 250-400$ for a key depending on what style fob etc

I have recently purchased, and getting programmed, a new key for my '01 996. Here's what it took.
New Key blank (brass) and fob from Dealer (Sunset Porsche, FL, USA), 217 w tax and shipping.
- The fob was Item: 996RECONTROL, 159.95
- The brass blank was Item: 99S653L853K100, 30.00
- My Indy called the local Porsche Center with my VIN and got the necessary codes for the car from them. He has a good relationship with the dealer. I could have gone direct to Porsche, but it would have been even more expensive.
- The brass blank was cut by a local locksmith recommended by my indy. He was able to cut it, but mentioned if the blank were hard (not brass) that he could not have done it. 35.00 USD
- My Indy is programming the fob and putting it all together next week, I believe that the charge is 1 hour labour, 135.00 USD.
Good luck!

Not a simple question because of what one might be looking for:
A simple key blank with no circuit board inside the head for working the doors and no "RFI Pill" for the car to detect to allow you starting the car
A full key with all of the above
Any of the above when the new key has to be reprogrammed not only to start the car, but also work the doors (and you don't have the original key code(s) for the car
Etc...
It can be quite expensive depending on what you need and what original key info you have for your car. The less you have, the more expensive it will be.
I have yet to approach a dealer. I will be trying out a third party service this Thursday, and will report back...

Thank you vetfever. I am curious myself about this whole key/lock procedure.
On my old E36 M3, it cost me $450 for a new key as the original one had worn so hard. At the time (2008/2009?) not many third parties were avaialble in Vancouver to code a key so the local BMW dealers were my only option. I hope this has changed.
