Off Topic: Batteries
Hi Rennlisters,
Hope you all are well!
My daily driver is 5 years old now and the battery is showing signs of age/wear/tear and is pretty much end of life. I had the battery checked out at a few places to make sure they weren't BS'ing me. Any how, time to replace it. I don't really want to buy an OEM battery from the dealership because the CCA is low but it comes with 2 year free exchange, and 5 years prorated after. If I buy and install it myself, warranty is only 1 year (WTF!) I need a Group 35 size battery and I don't need an AGM battery.
I tried to shop around and most batteries in that size run between $130 - $160, and some up to $250 (not sure why.) Costco doesn't have my battery due to supply chain issues and Interstate doesn't have my size and stock has no ETA. I could easily go to Canadian Tire and pick up their house-brand Deka/East Penn made battery for around $160 or so but I'm not sure what their warranty is like and some people absolutely hate their batteries it seems. I'm looking to see if anyone has suggestions or recommendations on where to get a good battery with a solid warranty. I am in the GTA, specifically in South Mississauga. Thanks!
Regards,

I've had good luck with royal battery sales. Cheap and good selection.

Thanks, Lemikson. It's not that I don't "want" an AGM battery, it's that I don't need one. Is there any advantage in having one? I don't have a fancy daily driver; It's just a Toyota Corolla.

Probably more but if the difference isn't that much i'd spring for one.

I suppose it's worth mentioning that we've been working from home so the car sits around 5 days a week. We head out on weekends for grocery runs and that's it. The past few weeks with the cold snap really killed the battery and had to get it jump started and that's when I went to get the battery tested and it was pretty much dead. The only thing keeping it alive now is I have it connected to a trickle charger.

Honestly, just pick up whatever is available. Batteries seem to be hit and miss, sometimes you get a good one that just goes forever...other times they're gone in 2 years.
The cold and not driving will kill any battery, especially if you just do short runs with it each time, doesn't have a chance to recharge enough.

Just pay a few bucks more (don't cheap out) and grab an Odyssey AGM and that will be the end of your battery headache. I picked mine up from their main office. Their batteries are top notch and have out performed the Optima's I previously had. Otherwise just roll the dice go to Costco , CTC or wherever and pick up your basic joe blow battery and hope for the best ...

For my TA, I bought a CT battery in 1980. It came with a lifetime guarantee. I held them to it for the longest time. Must have gotten a half dozen batteries out of them. I finally stopped because I wanted a battery that had only side terminals, not both, for looks reasons.

I bought a CT lifetime guarantee battery for the Z 3 decades ago and get a free no hassle replacement every time one fails. The CT batteries in my 993tt get replaced every 7 or 8 years even though they'll go 10 if you trickle them all the time. Last I checked CT had the best warranty. Full undepreciated replacement for failure in under 5 years. Read somewhere there are only 3 North American manufacturers and they're all the good and the same.
