and if I had stayed in private sector I would be making at least 40% more than I have been making in almost 20 years of public sector. Took me 10 years to get to my salary from the private sector. Why did I do it? As a way to contribute to public good. I’ve worked in policing, child protection and now electricity. 2 of those you hope you never need it but are relieved when it is there to help. The other we all use and will continue to use for the rest of our lives and likely for many many generations.

Yes but that was for a what?...37.5 hour week rather than a 50+ hour private sector week with lucrative overtime after 37.5?

Funny, was just talking about this with my family the other day. MP's should only get defined contribution pension for the time they serve. They deserve something for the time they're MP's but they don't deserve a full blown pension off of just 6 years of service.

Yet another way the government rakes us tax payers.

 

And that is the perception. Which is very untrue.

Not only do I work 50 hours a week. I'm also on call 361 days per year, I take 4 days not on call when I go hunting. I carry 2 phones. Regular iphone and a satellite phone so I can be reached at any time. And yes, I'm in regular contact with my guys that run 24/7.

Why do I do it? Because I genuinely enjoy what I do.

Should also mention, wife works ER downtown Toronto. And she doesn't do it for the OT. She actually decided to go back to ER because that is where she started her career and wants to end her career in ER.

Defined pensions are a perk or public sector employment. That does not mean that there are many of us that work very hard at what we do.

It is, but at the highest rates in North America and I don't get an inconvenience check when the power is off for an extended period like consumers get in the UK. I don't begrudge anyone who gets a good deal but everyone except for the top level bureaucrats get overtime. My point about the MP's is if you don't like it, vote 'em out.

 

I'm certainly not a top level bureaucrat and don't get overtime. So, not a correct conclusion. I also have never been paid overtime or ever been compensated for all the additional hours I work.

 

I have no problem with someone who's put decades into a public sector position to get a good pension.

I do have a problem with a full pension being provided after only 6 years of work.

 

my sarcastic comment aside, if this is a binary DB pension scheme, where you simply "qualify" after 6 years, that's ridiculous. I don't agree with it for Liberals, or any other party. The whole premise of a DB scheme is additional percentage points for each year you work. Give them it when they start, and have it accrue at 1-1.5pp per year of service, or similar.
