Smile Shipping GT3RS From NY to Vancouver

Hi everyone, this is my first post on RL.

TL;DR: Looking for reliable truck driver/car shipping company to transport New York registered car to Vancouver.

I'm a Canadian citizen who normally resides in New York on an F-1 U.S Visa. Recently I have returned to Vancouver due to the coronavirus and am looking to ship my 991.2 GT3RS from New York to Vancouver. I believe I am able to drive the car in Vancouver under NY registration since I qualify as a U.S resident. I have been looking for a shipping company online to do the job for me but the ones I have found have all seemed very sketchy and have plenty of bad reviews. I made contact with some of them, and I can confirm they do not seem professional based on their lack of information for my situation.

Has anyone shipped a U.S registered car to Canada to drive temporarily before? I plan to drive it in Canada for two or three months.

Thanks

TFX International. Their niche is cross-border transport of high end autos.

I hired them in 2013 to transport a 911 from Alberta to B.C. and my car arrived in the same transporter as several exotics. No complaints or problems to report from my own experience.

+1 TFX I used them locally but they are quite capable and do much cross border.

SRT Carriers is an owner operator that has also moved my GT3. He also does a fair bit of cross border business. Believe he even did a stint for Ferrari club cruise in California. More bespoke option that isn't tied to schedules to fill a big trailer.

We use TFX for higher end shipments. They are actually very reasonable price wise and responsible. So many carriers or private 'companies" aren't. I've got so many tales of cars going "missing" or the trucks tracking turning off.

Wow thats 3x TFX in a day

Looks like they are quite well-known then. Odd how my google results didn't show them.

I second what Gregster said about TFX and reasonable pricing etc

I shopped around, and had used Hansen's in the past (5 years ago) but they have more or less changed the way they do business with the consumer end (not dealerships etc.) and with the amount of time, effort, days off, inspections, reports, and unforeseen costs, it works out to about, if not the same, as what TFX would charge. Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, Porsche 996, Boxster, it didn't matter. I couldn't come out top to beat out TFX. The difference in cost was negligible, but the overall value could not be beat. That or I am just a really crappy shopper and an awful low baller.

Regarding driving in Vancouver with your NY-plated car, check with your insurance company that your policy allows it, and that you are covered for the duration you are in Vancouver. If your car is leased, check with your lessee whether there are any geographical restrictions as well.

TFX works--I planned to use them to ship a car from Alberta to NJ once--but you might also consider Plycar and have it shipped to Seattle and you drive it the rest of the way.

Part of it depends upon whether you plan to import it to Canada, where it will likely remain, or whether you plan to bring it back to the states. If the later, I would definitely consider Plycar to Seattle. (I used Plycar in 2018 to ship one car from LA to NY and one from CO to NY and they both arrived on the same truck.)

Good luck!

Hello and yes, I'm planning to only drive it in Vancouver for a few months, keeping my NY plates. I can't enter the U.S because of the current border closure so shipping to Seattle is not an option for me. Thanks for the response

Hansen's main business if not 99% is new car shipments and auction related stuff. They handle CN auto shipments across Canada... Open transport from BC to MTL is around 1000-1300$ takes about a week. Prices vary on whatever the bogus fuel surcharge is. They pretty much have the market on rail

We had an X6 go missing for 10 days because it wasn't scanned in at a yard in Halifax after arriving from NFLD. The broker carrier who carried it from St johns said take it up with the main carrier, main carrier said take it up with the broker. Truck driver didn't remember which yard it was at. We started joking the ship turned east and headed to Latvia.

Auto shipping is a business full of characters

$1000 - $1300 sounds about right. Add on insurance, a new requirement of an appraisal, time to drop it off, headaches along the way, fuel surcharges, cat and dog tax, anti-racism fees and all that junk, it works out to about the same as TFX. For some people, they can live with it, but when time and emotional attachment to a car aren't in the cards, then Hansen's is ok. I remember paying $1300 all in for my Corolla a while back, but this was 5 years ago. Today, I wouldn't bother with Hansen's.

although I have used TFX a number of times, for a GT car across the continent and across border, I recommend Reliable. They move all of the high end cars across the US and provide white glove service with tracking and they are on time. TFX has had some issues Reliable would have avoided. They may be a little more expensive but you will get piece of mind.

Thanks for the comment. Could you perhaps explain more about this incident(s) in more detail? What vehicle did you ship?
