Lightbulb Advantage of robot cars....

Now this is interesting from Booth in The Post. ".....studies, including research by the IIHS, and almost all of them — the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the Boston Consulting Group, and University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) just to name a few — estimate that human drivers, enhanced by the latest advanced drivers’ aids systems, could see about the same 30 per cent reduction in collisions as the institute predicts for fully self-driving robots. Even the IIHS acknowledges that it’s the control over driver temperament, rather than ability, that will make the difference, Alexandra Mueller, the lead author of the study, concluding “our analysis shows that it will be crucial for designers to prioritize safety over rider preferences if autonomous vehicles are to live up to their promise to be safer than human drivers.”

I wouldn't be investing in it. Self driven car will always be a market. Judging from atv, dirt bike and snow mobile sales I would think auto would fall into that same market. I can't see anyone ever wanting a robot atv or snow mobile.

ediit to add comment: I can see manufacturer racing replacing drivers for self driven cars though.

“Planning and deciding errors, such as speeding and illegal maneuvers, were contributing factors in about 40 percent of crashes in the study sample,” the report said. “The fact that deliberate decisions made by drivers can lead to crashes indicates that rider preferences might sometimes conflict with the safety priorities of autonomous vehicles. For self-driving vehicles to live up to their promise of eliminating most crashes, they will have to be designed to focus on safety rather than rider preference when those two are at odds.”

If you let self driving cars prioritize for safety, they will reduce by 75% (40% planning and deciding errors, 25% distraction errors, 10% incapacity errors). Current levels of technology could avoid all the rear end collisions.

The real issue will be what to do with the 10's of thousands of people, just in Ontario, that depend on you crashing your car for their livelihood. The tow trucks, body shops, chiropractors, injury lawyers, insurance adjusters. They can't all become YouTube stars and Instagram models.

So, we should keep smashing our cars so the tow truck drivers can continue their turf wars...

I get your point, but society adapts.

Brilliant. Never thought of that. All of a sudden I'm a big fan and hope this technology is perfected asap.

As long as there are pickup trucks, there will be someone camped in the left lane.

But with self driving cars.....soms funny musings
- in the event of an accident.....who's at fault and how many injury claims will there be...especially in Brampton.
- if it's a self driving car, do you need a "drivers" license to own and operate one
- since the car does the driving, can you send the young kids off on their own without an adult
- car does the driving so is it you, the car or the manufacture that gets insured
- in the even of a manufacturers recall, will you wake to find the car went off to the dealership on it's own

Is Johnny cab the future?

Most importantly, in the event of a choice between running over an old lady or hitting a wall and killing the car owner/passenger. would it run over the old lady as 80% of drivers would?
