Has anybody had a bumper shipped from the US to Canada? The dimensions seem too large for regular shipments.
Ideally, I'd like it shipped to my house, but if I need to cross the border to pick it up, I'd be willing to do so if it saves a lot on cost.
Any ideas what would be the best method?
I've used Cross Border Pickups for fairly large items (ie. exhaust in a pretty large box) so if your seller can package it up I'm sure CBP can handle it. Found their rates are quite reasonable and aside from the odd delay they are pretty reliable too.
@afflux
I'm not sure where you are located, but
I've done it by having large items such as bumpers drop shipped to Niagara Falls.
Then go down and pick things up myself.
I usually try to coordinate doing a few items at a time to make the trip worthwhile.
I recently shipped an Audi RS6 bumper to the US. Only place I could find to take it was DHL, due to its large size
When I had originally received it from Germany import, the guy had wrapped it all over with bubble wrap and foam. It arrived perfect condition, but I didnt really want to take a chance shipping that way. Plus, DHL was going to charge a large premium for a non-stackable item
So, I decided to build a wooden frame cage around the bumper, and bolt it in. I had originally planned it as a simple rectangle frame.... but once I got into it, I found that it wasnt that simple. To protect the bumper from all sides of its non-uniform shape, I ended up building something more complicated and time consuming. Included cut-outs for carrying, and covered the whole thing in cardboard boxes stapled on.
I am sure this is far from the most efficient way, but I always go way overboard with protection when shipping.
In any case, as others have stated, if you can pickup from CBI in Niagara, you are probably way better off on the rates. Unless the guy has a DHL account
I appreciate all the great input from everyone. I ended up making an account with Crossborder Pickups so lets hope it all goes smoothly.
While we're at it, any body shop suggestions to get this painted/installed in the Toronto area?
@Halo777 - what ducktail did you get? I have my eye one for a while. Did the that shop prime and paint that tail previous to your paint job? If so, what is was the price rang for the job if you don't mind me asking?

The ducktail I have is a custom one. It was part of a large aftermarket wing, and I chopped off the wing posts and had my bodyshop modify it into the ducktail. Since everything was done as part of the complete job, I cant say what the price is for just the ducktail work.
There are some threads that show all the different ducktails for the 997. You should check it out. I have purchased from Getty, as well as other people that I know, and so far only great things to report about their stuff. He has a couple different designs.
One thing to note when you are looking at the options, some of them are not a full decklid. They are cheaper, but they only replace the stock grill piece on the factory decklid. I personally dont like the look of those, as I prefer the whole decklid be replaced.
Also, I am still on the fence about the whole ducktail thing. But, Ill see how this one looks with the car when everything is done, and then decide if I will keep or not. They generally are an easy sell if you dont like them, as people are always looking for them.
