Lost one last night - Ontario, Radar Detector
I am just posting this as a heads up for those that run RD's
I no longer own a Bel Sti Driver radar detector .... I had it for about 8 yrs (undetected), and lost it last night.
Got pulled over on the way home from a Christmas party on my wife's side of the family last night... Cop was decent about it, but I knew that if they did a search he would find it, and I didn't want the family to stand out in the cold while he searched for it...
$170 ticket which stings a little, but it was better than the speeding ticket I could have gotten... Cop says won't show up on my insurance, last speeding ticket was 6+ yrs ago in town...
I figure over the 8 years I had it, I drove more than 250,000km - maybe close to 300,000km. I don't use the detector much on 400 series roads, too many false alarms, and waze is good for those roads. Most of my travel is on 2 lane county roads with speed limits of 80kph or 90 kph. My rural commute would see maybe 1 car a minute (lightly travelled - so waze wasn't very good - no crowds to crowdsource), and I might meet an OPP cruiser once a month.
Be careful out there Perth County OPP were able to detect my STi RD.

That cruiser may have been equipped with a Spectre Radar Detector Detector. Your STi in it's day was shielded very well and was supposed to be 100% undetectable, but maybe the newer Spectre RDD is able to detect the STi. Apparently the latest Uniden R series and the likes have enough shielding that they are undetectable by current Spectre RDD. I wonder if he used some other method like triggering his radar and saw you immediately tap the brakes?
I don’t currently run a detector but if I did it would have to be equipped with the latest tech until the other side catches up, it’s a car and mouse game.

wow i didnt even realize people used radar detectors anymore , with the amount of false triggers and the fact if a laser hits you you are done made me pitch mine almost a decade ago.
interesting to see they are still out there.

I have a "friend", that carries 2 in the car. One that works, one that is sacrificial.
Get pulled over??? Give them the disposable one.
Make sure you keep it somewhere WARM. They will be suspect if the unit is stone cold.
From what I was told by my "friend".
Costco.ca used to sell them. I can't see them listed now.

depends on the roads you drive... I found it 95% USELESS on the 400 series roads from between London to Oshawa and up to Barrie, but waze seems to work decently there... I don't use it on trips into the GTA, plus I am happy if I can maintain a 115kph average on the 401

I too am running WAZE for surveillance. Though police notification is not always accurate. It is only as good as the person who enters it. Myself, I can never seem to hit the correct icon. i could be entering pot hole, when I want Police.
But it at least is a notification of something. Stay safe.

Here in the States, on trips, not round town, i use my Escort360 and it has saved my bacon several times. It even gave me a Laser warning about a 1/4 mile from a trooper using a hand held laser gun giving me a second to slow down to 60 mph in Washington State. Oregon and Washington State interstate roads sometimes go from 70 to 60 or 50mph passing some towns even though on an interstate highway. And those troopers with their smokey the bear silly hats are unforgiving.

yup i use exclusively waze now .. but yeah i have the same issue with the police icon , by the time i figure it out people think the police are actually 3km further down the road, but i think it still helps some people .. i seem to get a lot of " thank you" from wazers.

re: waze.
I wonder if you get better routing the more points or thanks you get. Had a discussion with some hockey dads, and if you have 2 phones in the same car and both running waze to the same rink, they might get different routes if traffic is getting backed up. I wonder if it is part of their mandate to help ease congestion by splitting up the crowd.
I tell my wife, I'll get the fast route, cause I'm more liked on waze.....

waze does not try to get you the fastest route. it wants to accumulate data. that is why 2 people in same car often get routed differently.
I don't care about wazes data I just want to get there fast.

Interesting that the STi appears to have been detected. I drove with one on 400 series highways all the time back when I lived in ON. At that time I heard rumors that Spectre RDD could detect them, but only if a much larger signal capture horn was used, and that the stock couldnt detect them. I remember that the OPP around Napanee are extremely proactive in this respect and I remember one of them going online with his STi captures. Long time ago.
Theyre legal out here in BC. I now use a Uniden R3 and Waze, but mostly just drive at a pace that isnt an issue. R3 is a great detector.

+1 for the R3. It’s a huge improvement over the STi. I’ve been running mine for about 6 months and it has proved to be very useful. I agree with others that it’s useless on the 400 series highways and in the GTA, but extremely helpful on trips to NY & Vermont and on rural roads in Ontario.
