Default 2014 Cayman S Purchase or Not?

Been a long time since a P-Car ownership - 5 yrs now and seems like a lifetime. ex 911 and Boxster S - I am looking at a 2014 Cayman S - fairly well equipped: PDK, blc Metallic, premium, infotainment, Nav, 20 inch wheels, sport chrono etc … $93k CAD MSRP - Canadian Car w/ 40 kms and full service records - VERY clean. Guy wants $59k + tax … I have no idea whether this is reasonable, fair or delusional ? P-Car and Auto mkt changing so fast that its hard to know what is market anymore. Ontario car. I like the last of the non Turbo variant and will only be driving 6/8k kms per year so don't want to spend more than I need to for a garage queen. Very much appreciate any feedback or suggestions on price at this time. Many thanks, Abe

You can look at vmrcanada which says around $46k however black book prices for Porsches are difficult because I imagine the ones running through auctions are not typical good examples. 50% residual after 5 years would be pretty good on a normal car (usually high 50's after 3 years). Asking 63% after 5, almost 6 years, is aggressive so you'd have to compare it to others on the market. In the end I think you have to decide what it's worth to you and make an offer. It may be worth more to him to keep at a realistic sale price.

If you really like this car I would say 45K to pay . But this car must have CPO, and make sure you keep extend CPO every two years.
You dont want end up like me struggling in a 22K+tax long block rebuild bill...

What year is your car? Prior to 2009?

Abe - you say 5 year old car, I count 2014 to 2020 model year as seven. To me, 40% of purchase price, plus its winter. Who in their right mind buys sports car in the winter.
Other than a Rennlister....
I'm with Loees. Somewhere in the low 40's.
40,000 kms. It could need brakes.
I have a PDK in my Macan. It needs a PDK service. I'm sure its 1500 at the dealer, 500 at an indy.
Also shopping pads and rotors. 1700 parts at the dealer. $900 from German parts. Waiting on Cyber Monday discount code.
5 years without a Porsche? You must have forgotten about the pain in your wallet.
Shop carefully. Don't get emotional.

I hear you - I couldn't get wrap my mind over this either …now looking at an 08 Cayman S - fully serviced w/ 119kms on the dial - 6 speed and clean ...and had a recent PPI on it for $25k CAD. The brakes recently done, tires ...service but original clutch ! I think this might be a better option …?

tks for the reply and some thoughtful insights. I hear you loud and clear, it seems I may have quickly forgotten the $$$$$$$$ I paid over the years when I owned these cars. The mkt is clearly all over the place and its hard to gauge what is appropriate ? I am also looking at an 08 Cayman S as well - well maintained with all service and recently done, brakes, fluids including the IMS seal ...solid shape w/ 119k on the dial for about $25k CAD ...! Sure I big difference from the 14 model but much cheaper given that I will be lucky to get 6k a year out of this car. I am beginning to remember just how little I drove the 911 and Boxster S i had in past ... and not sure I want to repeat the same mistake having put so much into it? Any thoughts on the 08 Cayman S - likely will need a clutch in future - about $3k CAD for clutch and flywheel ! thanks again for your thoughts, Abe

As an aside, I've been watching for a 2014 / 15 Cayman S with sub 80,000 km for the past year. I missed one in the low 50s. In general, the clean cars appear to be listed in the high $50s. I agree, 6 year old$90K car for $60K seems crazy. Especially given the price of the new Corvette and used 2017+ Cayman (I don't mind the turbo). All this to say, I expect the 2014+ Cayman's to eventually drop in price like the 2009+ plus one's did. I'd hesitate on anything prior to 2009 due to IMS concerns, but that likely is blown out of proportion. Good Luck. I'd jump at a sub $50K 2014 Cayman S in the right colors, but just haven't found one.

Why would one assume that an engine rebuild might be likely? Especially on a car that only has 40 kms?

Sure, nothing is impossible, but if we thought like that no one would buy used cars.

I missed a 2017 Cayman S - blk FULL LOAD w/ msrp at $115k for $68k CAD w/ only 25kms on the dial 4 weeks ago because I was late in seeing the car by a few hours ...had I gone in the am I would have been that owner ...lost but not forgotten. The guy wanted a 2020 Corvette ! Nevertheless, the prices remain crazy. You will as I - unlikely find a Cayman S 2014 fairly equipped sub $50k - not now at least … If you can get one in the low $50 k range and low mileage its worth it. There are no deals to be had only if you have crazy sellers who must sell and there are few and far … I agree on the IMS - fully blown out of proportion in my view. Lets see what the next few months bring …? Good luck as well.

The asking price for the '14 CS is in the ball park, if not a little low IMO. As a data point, our 2012 one-owner, high-spec Cayman S with 54k kilometres, full records and two sets of wheels/tires (Black Spyder 19s and 18" Cayman S winters) just sold this week to an American buyer for $36.25k US (which converted to about $48k Canadian).
