Default Some non ims newb questions about getting into The 997.1 game.

After deeply looking at preferred budget 35-55k, usage, and likes, I’m after a 05-09 997.1. Unless the 09-12 come down a bit after the winter.
6 speed, 911, RWD. The Wide hips of the S are cool too. I plan on baby dailing this thing 8mths of the year. I don’t drive that far for work though. Planning on getting a lift, and I’m a hard core hobby mechanic that loves wrenching.

Thoughts on dailing a 11-15 year old 911? Our backup beater is an 08 civic is still tip top..

Accident damage.. Lots of talk here on never buying a car in an accident...Why? Is there a certain level of destruction?
I know to stay clear from salvage builds, but a fender bender with all the logs? My wife got hit in our van, needing some fender work and a tail light, properly done although repainted...looks perfect. Wondering how that’s a deal breaker with 911s or Porsche’s?

Private sales with full logs, vs new/used dealers vs those only used exotic dealers you see on autotrader, etc..

CPO or am I way off the mark with the cars age?

Have seen some nice 996s but going fwd I think a 997 would be the better choice. .

Thx

Wow. I thought those are way out of my league. I’m talking Canadian dollar here.

I like the later 996 yet finding a T on autotrader is slim pickings.

So youd have no reservations on daily’n that?

Wider hips are on the C4 not the C2. matters not if it's an S.
I'd be surprised if anyone offered a warranty on a 15 year old car.
These are always fun to watch though.

Can definitely wrench on them without much reservation at home. I have a 05 that needed some work, brakes, clutch a few small touch-ups. Just did the clutch during the off season on my scissor lift. Worked like a charm, just leave enough in the budget to deal with the inevitable repairs... and definitely be aware of scoring. To address this properly with Nickies could be at least 15k.

I bet. Gonna look at those 996Ts as well. What kind of scissor lift do you have. That’s actually more of a want than the 911.

My budget was the same as yours. I also wrench and have had a loft for almost 10 years. I ended up going 996 for 3 reasons: 1. Don’t like the silver, chrome black of 997 interior. 2. Hated the dated in 2005 head unit. 3. No spare tire in 997. I had cold sweats being stuck in Temagami looking for a 285 tire on a Sunday night.

I purchased a 70km black on black 2003.....

I am in a very same spot and we are likely looking at some of the same cars.

I liked the 996 Turbo and there is one that someone here is selling. I drove it and its awesome and something I am still considering.

I am leaning towards a 996 C4S. 997.1's are also on the radar and there are a few that I have looked at - but I am not bothered by either the headlights or interior of the 996 (which seems to be an issue for some), and think the 996 offers great value.

Good luck on your search, hope we aren't competing for the same cars! The advice here is great. PM me if you want insights into any of the cars in the GTA, I have had the chance lately to look at most of them.

I have the Bendpak 6000lb lift. I was able to get the complete engine and gearbox in together, without modifying the hoist as I've heard many others do.

For a 997, you can either get an 05 with more easily replaceable IMS or 06+ that is much more difficult to replace. Myself I would get an 05 then budget for the IMS Solution and never worry about it again.

As for a lift, I have a Max Jax 2 post low rise and wouldn’t be without it. Just used it to swap a powertrain in a Boxster.

So 2005 is the only easy IMS swap? Other than that it’s the 996 non Ts..?

2006-9 it’s not doable?

And then there’s Bore Scoring... I know what it is, but how do you test for it..?

Nice. Another maxjax owner...

I may have to borrow that box you made to go with my low-rise tranny jack some day if I ever get around to doing the IMS.... I do have midrise jackstands that work well with the maxjax should the need arise.... West side of Woolwich township....

1999-2005 are swappable IMS bearings. 2006-09 require cases to be split to replace.

As for bore scoring, you're into different territory again and effects even later cars. This is a good start....first of Jake's extensive series on bore scoring. Subscribe and enjoy.
