I can't see the front of my car from where I am sitting. I actually find the back end of the 997 to be unforgivably ugly.

Clive; each person has their own taste as to what they like. When Pinky Lau desiged the 996 most people loved the design (including the headlights). That is why each person should choose the model that appeals to him/her most. Different strokes for different folks. That is why we don't all drive the same car.
Me, I think I like all Porsches...even brown ones.

To the OP I suggest 996turbo for the WIN if you can find a good one!

I agree. 996 is a much better looking car.

I was in the same situation a couple years ago. Was shopping for a 997.1 C2S or C4S. Realized that 996 Turbos were going for similar prices, and test drove one. That ruined the 997s for me, but I really wasn't a fan of the 996 interior quality or exterior styling. Sooooo I ended up with a 997 Turbo on the reasoning that it wouldn't depreciate much, if at all. Which is hasn't, although I've spent a bunch on a clutch, coolant pipe pinning, and other misc.

As far as 996tt vs 997.1, the Turbo will feel much, much faster. My guess would be it will also see less depreciation (or may even appreciate). Up to you whether the styling and amenities of the 997 are worth more than the power of the Turbo.

This is what I am wrestling with - I need to get out to test drive the 996 Turbo. Would actually be an easier decision if there wasn’t one in my price range!

If you're anything like me, the power of the turbo will ruin the 997 for you. Might not want to drive it if you're not crazy about the styling... (Unless you want to end up with a 997tt like me...)

NA 996 or 997 needs borescope done as part of ppi.

personally, I'd stay away from the naturally aspirated engines of that era. They are junk.

you will love a turbo 996
