Go for the 987.

986 has IMS issues. It will break at some point.

This was the car.

Really left a sour taste. The lady did not know much about IMS but had it serviced annually with new AOS, brakes, and tires

I think 986 plus cost of ims replacement is still a great bargain

How much does an IMS replacement cost these days anyway? I remember they were an upwards of $5000 early on, but have come down a lot now.

Ouch. Plus, what, about 8 hours of labour @ $110/hour? Yikes.

Conversely, you can easily find a 986 with the IMS done.

There will be other cars...

Conversely, you were going to back out of one of the cars I assume... (you said you left deposits on 2 cars in the original post)

You placed deposits in 2 cars with the intention of buying 1. Am I reading this correctly? Was it your plan to walk away from one deposit?

Don't forget with the 987.2 you have to factor in the cost of updating the shift cables which cost anywhere from $500USD for the Numeric Racing one or OEM which are few hundred more.

One was private while the other was a dealer.

The dealer took my deposit knowing I was working on another deal privately.

I had leverage as the car was on the dealer lot for 3 weeks

Is this a must-do mod?

Based upon your research, at what km do the stock cables fail?
