Window shopping in the US -what's the duty again?

Yes, that's true. I got in a fight with PCNA years ago when I did my first import (2006, I believe). It was just as imports were becoming a thing. Before completing the purchase I talked to certain local dealership about getting a recall letter once the car arrived and they said no problem, then PCNA changed their policy when the car was literally on the truck on its way here from North Carolina, and refused to provide one when it landed. I asked to be grandfathered and they refused. Said dealership was very unhelpful as well. I was discussing this on the UCR forum (before I was on rennlist, I think) and had a fair bit of support from the membership, then the owner of said dealership threatened to pull their sponsorship from the club, and UCR deleted the thread. I ended up getting the letter from the seller (who got it from their local dealership) but it left a bitter taste in my mouth for said local dealership.

Ok just so I can get a rough idea of comparative costs, for say a 4 yr old Pcar tax wise into Ontario from USA
At the border:
6.1% duty
5% GST
Plating it:
8% HST
Now the 5% tax I already paid at the border I don’t pay that again at the MTO so that’s the 19.1% total tax mentioned earlier in the thread to get it into Ontario and onto the road? Or is it another 13% (8+5) total to get it plated.
So basic difference in total taxes USA vs buying privately in Ontario is the 6.1%duty at border?

Other than the exchange at time of purchase.......
5.0% HST when you cross the border (Federal)
6.1% Duty when you cross the border (Federal)
Other fees for certification, recall notice , whatever....(Provincial)
8.0% PST when you register to get your plates in Ontario (Provincial) (PST obviously varies if registered in other provinces)
When I bought mine, exchange rate (which was par at the time) aside, I just budgeted a round 20% for all other stuff.

BTW to the op they charge 8% tax on the 5% GST.
RIV fee is around $350. Air conditioning fee is around $250 and car weighs over 4,000 pounds more duties for overweight vehicle.
What are you looking for btw?

Is RIV even applicable to a vehicle of that age? I don't recall that it is.
