Security cameras for garage
#16
Garage is not at my primary residence and I won't be there every day - so that's not an option!
Thanks for the feedback. I'll look into securing the garage as well as possible. I plan to tear it down and rebuild with a laneway house above, so when I do that it will be designed as securely as possible - I'm looking for a stop gap for the next year.

I am using the alro, connect though my wireless network and plug into a ac plug so doesn't need to change batteries. Get alerts through text or email and can view with app on phone or computer. Up to 5 cameras at no cost or monthly billing. Also allows you to talk though it and record voice but be careful with turning on voice recording as it is against the law to record conversations in Canada unless you have a warrant to do so.

Maybe it just Ontario I am no lawyer, but nothing I found in my research says it isn't illegal. Everything on the net says is is illegal unless its your own conversation or only with other participates having given consent.

You obviously want to make it difficult but you can only do so much. If they want your car, they'll get your car.
Or whatever else they may want to steal. That's what insurance is for.

The concern I would have is an audio recording where people have a reasonable expectation of privacy. If they are inside my garage, or outside my garage attempting to gain entry, I would argue that they don't. In a more practical sense, if someone breaks into your garage, talks to their buddy about stealing your car, and you turn over the tape to the police, I can't imagine them charging you under the criminal code.

Great point. The house is an income property, so I don’t need it monitored. I’ll look into monitoring plans solely for the garage.

I have had cameras for years. Even hunting cameras with 3G on Rogers. Monitored seciurity systems are TOO MUCH money to do properly, so you can monitor your doors, but get your own SD Cameras as technology changes FAST. So the very BEST Camera on the market for the money - BY FAR right now, is this. But VERY HARD to get. I just order 5 more yesterday as Amazon had them for a few minutes before they sold out again. Amazon sent me an email as I was on wait list for a month. They are $19 USD from company but $29 I think from Amazon Canada. You can buy them on the WYZE company website too but you can only pay with Amazon $$ and they must get shipped to USA if you order that way.

Any windows in the garage?
Perps are less likely to break in, if they can't see the booty.
I have blinds covering the windows.
I also have 3M film on all my ground floor windows and door.
Just in case any of you want to break in and have a club meeting.
Simple no extra cost protection. 4" screws on all door hinges, and door catch/strike plate.
Dead bolt, keyed on both sides. I have even been know to riddle the post or beam along the hinge with 100's of nails.
So you can't take a chainsaw to the hinge. Cottage exercise, where they have nothing but time.

I had all my windows tinted on the south side of the house and the 3M security film installed by a professional.
I did have a problem with some of the 3M tint. They replaced some of it under lifetime warranty.
I'm a stickler for detail. I would not tackle the job myself, as it needs to be perfect and dust free.
Amazon does have some films. For a garage? I would consider doing it myself if it was a small job.
