Anyone imported a RHD to Australia ?
I'm contemplating bringing my 944 Turbo back with me if I move from the US to Australia.
Has anyone done this ? How hard is it to get rego ?
From what I've seen, the going rate for a Turbo is around $20k, so it ought to be cheaper, assuming it's legal.
One other thing - what's the DE situation in Australia ? I'll likely be living in Canberra or Sydney.
Thanks

Importing a Car
I took my 3.2 911 from Hong Kong to Oz and also took back a 300E Benz. There are 2 methods, one is cars made before 1989-90 and the second is owning it for a year first and bringing it back as a personal import. Personal import is the preferred method otherwise you will need to get your car back to the state of an original imported Aust car. There is a web site you can look this up to get the latest info.

Hmm, my car is an '86, and I've owned it for over a year (probably two years by the time I'd be bringing it in). Looks like I should be OK.
Big question now is running it left hand drive. The HK cars were RHD, weren't they ?

mroberts,
There is a guy in Adelaide (my home town) that just imported his 944T back with him from Austin TX, he post on the main 924/944/968 forum, his name is Wayne Graham and goes by the name of OZ951 do a serch and email him, he's a killer guy and would be THE one to Ask,

Unless it is for track use or a parts car Importing a LHD 951 is not worth it , you can buy a 951
from 15k-45k depending on condition, if you can find one as they are becoming rear on the local
scene
good luck

bringing it here should be fine- but wont be registerable in sydney or canberra... LHD vehicles can only be street registered in WA, NT and SA i believe- NSW & ACT are a definate no
buy local- check out http://carpoint.ninemsn.com.au/porta...opDefault.aspx
there are currently around 400-500 models for sale at any one time- some good bargains in there too!
best of luck with whatever you decide

You would be better off selling and buying again. It would proove simpler and far less time consuming as well as cheaper.Unless you fit VERY tight guidlines the import duty plus GST and other charges plus shipping will proove uneconomical.

Thanks Bruce.
Do you get to give your 964 Turbo a bit of a run in HK? I dont know the kowloon/N.T roads very well at all, hence stick to HK side mostly. Weekend traffic, as you probably know, is a bit of a nightmare. Often restricted to just a run on the eastern corridor...

Alan,
Theres a few good roads in the NT, out to Tai Mai Tuk and also over route Twisk near Kam Tin. I do not get to drive enough and really got the car to eventually take back to Oz. I live in country Vic where there are many great driving roads.
