Hi there,
I grew up in Johannesburg and now live in Reno, Nevada.
Nice to see the SA presence and to read the Afrikaans. It's been 20 years since I have heard or read it and so it is fun to catch up on it.

Hi guys, I'm a Sandtonian with a 964. Groet ook maar net al my Porsche kollegas. Cannot believe how inexpensive cars are outside SA. Cheers and great driving.

Well where I live it is being overrun with South Africans and I have to say that their presence is really starting to receive a negative reaction. If that sounds racist, I'm sorry, but that's the truth. In parts of Australia it's becoming like a colony of SA's and all the locals are being squeezed out in a manner that is both unbelievably arrogant and ignorant. I have met some SA's and become friends with them, but they are in an incredible minority. I hope that now they're here in exponentially increasing droves they might look around and see that all is not golden down under. Maybe some of you guys can mention it to your friends or family because I fear a backlash very soon. Not violent, but something just the same.
There is a very strong undercurrent of dislike for them. It doesn't have to be that way. Tell them to open their eyes. Aussies are VERY relaxed people but nobody likes being pushed around in their own backyard.
Just a little bit of friendly advice.

Hi, does anyone know how it works with imports of 911s to SA? On paper it looks like it should be fine for "returning citizens" who can qualify for bringing cars in duty free. But I am wondering whether some magical tax or penalty gets applied in the end if you are able to buy a car for around half the local value. Or is it mega expensive to insure them once here, or is it difficult to sell them on later? I am thinking about brining a car from the UK - any advice is welcome!
Cheers!

I have been thinking along the same lines for some time. I know it definitley needs to be right hand drive. I heard you have to keep the car in your name for a certain amount of time ie: you arent bringing cars in to sell them on. The taxes im not sure about. If you find any more info please keep me posted.

I have tried to access official information online but not found anything yet. What I have heard and read however is that returning citizens may qualify for a full rebate on import duties and taxes. A few of the preconditions is that you must have owned the vehicle for either 6 or 12 months (I have seen both), and that you must not sell it on for minimum 20 months after importing. I also know of one case of an UK import which went fine (no duties) but the value of that car was less than the threshold (R130k) to qualify for ad valorem import tax (min 0.75%, max 20% of market value). Since a 911 would be worth significantly more I am wondering if "something" happens and you would be taxed on the arbitrage margin anyway. It sounds too good to be true otherwise so I was hoping to get in touch with someone who might have first hand knowledge or has imported a car themselves. Anyone?
Cheers!
