Default Wireless instructor to student in car radios?

Does anyone use any products meant for motorcyclists for instruction?

It seems like not having a wire running between instructor and student helmets would be a nice thing, and since most of the products out there are developed for motorcycles, you should be able to hear over the track noise.

Both my helmets have internal wiring so I would just need to get a pigtail mike for the student. Thoughts?

Here are a few I was looking at:

My concern with wireless would be:
Electronic noise
The student would walk away without their ear piece
Nice to see you yesterday!

I still have one of a pair of Chatterbox FRS radios that I used to use. All of the above happened at one time or another. I'm pretty sure a student didn't walk off with the other one but I'll be damned if I know what happened to it. Most of the time they worked pretty well and you can also use it wired like a regular chatterbox. I still have it as a backup after going through a couple of the newer model wired ones. It was made sturdier.

I've not used them in the car, but we use the Sena models for dual sport motorcycle. Can't imagine why they wouldn't work in the car. They are a bit more pricing than the chatterbox though

I wouldn't use Bluetooth for instructing because I need it to receive calls and have my playlist going on the stereo.

KISS - Keep it simple. Minimize opportunities for interference.
If you are going RF, good luck trying to diagnose the problem.

Good to see you Rick.

I may get one of the cheap sets. As for cost I akready ruined a headset when i closed the door on it so there is risk no matter what you do.

Plus Chatterboxes are sorta like "this would be a good time in the lesson to cut out for no f-ing reason!"

Bought one but had to return it because of the vox and digital filter delay. The vox was most annoying cutting off your first word until the vox figured out you're talking, followed be a small but annoying delay. Maybe they've gotten better, but probably not cheaper than a wired version. Im thinking it would be curious to just use ear pieces and just call on the cell phone. Never tried it though.

I ended up upgrading from my Chatterbox (of which I have had a few, but no real problems considering price and what I've put them through) to a rally-grade Rosso.
This is still wired but a huge improvement, both audio quality and the ability to adjust driver and 'co-driver' (instructor) volume separately. A much more substantial feel to it.
I bought it wired for Stilo helmet to helmet and added a student headset.
Good stuff

I have used the AVCOM 2XR for many years (About 8). Its actually an Aviation intercom. Tons of ports for input/output and of course instructor/student comms. I like the squelch feature because it can help filter out wind noise. Uses the usual adapter cables to use IMSA or NASCAR jacks (which is when I most frequently use it). Powered by two 9 volt batteries that seem to last literally forever. There are later more expensive versions so this one is now on sale. It looks much bigger than it is. A bit bigger than the Rosso, but very well made and cheaper than when I bought mine

Its on sale for $199 now at AVCOM which can also supply cables. AVComm 2XR

Who was your source for the Rosso?

Hi Mike
Privately sourced via a Rennlist member. Also, Drew Wikstrom at Tachterion can get them.

A delay would be very bad for instructing.

I was trying to find specs on it. My first thought was "this looks big" but you say that it really isn't. For $200 not a bad price.
