This discussion centers on transponders used for car and motorcycle racing. Note that aircraft transponders allow the user to change the squak code and air traffic control then associates that code with your tail number.
The difficulty with a "knockoff" transponder is ensuring the end user has the ability to choose a transponder code that is not in use at that event. This brings up a potential "unintended consequence", if the user chooses a transponder code for which an AMB user has a registered mylaps account, that user will have "ghost" events in which they did not participate.

You don't have to register the old ones. Sure you can to get info from mylaps (never have). The only person that needs to know what the trasnponder number is is the T&S guy. The only issue would be if you are at an event with somebody that had exactly the same transponder number....would be nice if you could hook it up to a computer and change it if you needed to.
My understanding of the transponder is it just sends out the transponder number. Unsure if it does this constantly, or only when it get excited by the loop. I mean, how difficult is that. All you need to know is the frequency and the block of data that is sent (what it contains and how it is formatted).

What a sweet situation that guy (AMB) has created. $500 for $1 of hardware and technology around it built by someone else.
