Default Mixing 114 and 93 to make 100 Octane?

What do you guys think of mixing leaded 114 Octane ($5.18 per gal) with unleaded 93 Octane ($1.75 per gal) to acheive 100 Octane gas for track use?

I have an '87 930 putting out 346 rwhp and have always used 100 Octane for insurance on the track.

By going with this method of blending, I can save about $50-60 per tank over straight 100 costing $5.50 per gal at the track.

Any Pos or Negs to be had? TIA

Jim

Jim, there have been a couple spirited discussions on this topic in the past. The message I took out of all of it was that if your engine was not designed for use with leaded gas, don't do it. While removal of the cat in a race car means you don't have to worry about the lead poisoning the catalyst, you still have to deal with lead buildup in the engine. Other threads have asked about using low-lead aviation gas - same interpretation for me.

I also use the leaded 114 and 93 unleaded to get the 100 octane in my track car.
Don't think the lead build up will happen for many years. By that time the motor will need to be refreshed.

I have run with straight 116 probably 20 or so times, I've put in 10 gals and had a great time on the street (25psi daily spoils the hell out of you). You can see the lead on the tailpipe after a bit, but after 2 tanks of unleaded that is gone.

Well I have nine 5 gal jugs in my truck getting ready to go to VIR tomorrow. Guess, I'll give it a shot this time and see what happens (as in just a fun weekend driving fast and that's all!)

The only thing that will occur is your O2 sensor will go bad quicker from the lead. You can bring it back to life a few times by cleansing it with a Butane torch. No other negatives.

I read Danno's site awhile back when I was looking into using Toluene as a octane booster. Just didn't feel like beig that much of a chemist.

Anyway, I uesd the 114/93 brew this past weekend and had a blast. As far as mixing, it was 5 gals of 114 and 10 gals of 93 poured in the tank and then driven a little to mix.

Drove 360 miles over 3 days trouble free.
