Hpde car and lap time questions

Gotta pay to play. You just have to decide how much you're willing to pay. Ie, what's your comfort level if you total the car at the track?
Mine is fairly low, hence my track car being an E36 M3 that I have ~ $15k into...

why do people have to equate track and totaling your car. Over 8 DEs this year I saw 2 totaled gt3s and both were in instructor group on the track with walls close by (Glen and Palmer). How many cars get totalled on the streets?

Agreed
Yes it can happen and usually doesn't
But you can also buy insurance for each event
As it's been said...pay to play
If you can put a $50k+ car in that environment you can pay 1% to insure it

If you really want to look at lap times you can always go to rennpoints.com and look at lap records for the specific class of car you are looking at. For instance G class, at the Glen, is 2:09.
But as Peter pointed out - many variables go into a lap time. In the 2015 Glen club race my fastest lap time was 2:13. I didn't do the club race in 2016 but I was there a few months ago and did a low 2:07. Nothing changed on the car except hours and hours of instruction for me. That's where I lost almost 6 seconds.
Lastly, I agree with Rick. Buy the car that excites you. My rule is that I don't want to be sitting in a hospital bed some day when I am old regretting the things I didn't do. Buy the damn car you want if you can afford it and have fun!

I'm in the mkt for an hpde car and trying to decide how deep to commit. Kicking around a NASA prepped e36 m3 or a G class 993. Yeah very different cars but both appealing to me. I have a street 993 so I have familiarity with the chassis and potential expenses. And the sound! Will I be giving up some specialness if I go with the e36? People who have them seem to like them. Also 1/2 cost of the 993.
Also I was wondering what a decent time at the glen is. As a unit of measure. Not that I'm racing. But to gauge capability
