Default School me on chassis - Boxster/Cayman/911

Figured I would leverage everybody's knowledge and experience. Considering building another GTS car for NASA. Boxsters seem very cheap as a starting point (986) and people seem to make them pretty quick especially with a 3.6 in it. Caymans seem to hold their own very well. 996 911s are good but I'm scared of non-GT models and anything GT based gets bumped to GTS4.

Would Boxster work or stay away? Power being equal would 911 be better than Cayman or Boxster?

Thanks everybody

Stupid question. Isn't the boxster and Cayman suspension the same? I always though a Cayman was a hardtop boxster...

Are they that different?

Yes, Boxster and Caymans are the same chassis (when talking about 987 generations) and the 986 Boxster is the same for all intent and purpose. (until you get into the 981 chassis)

In simple terms, the Cayman will have better aerodynamic properties due to it's sloped roof line (compared to a Boxster with an OEM style hard top), and potentially a more rigid chassis than a Boxster... but it will be slightly heavier. That being said, once you put a GOOD cage in a Boxster, I'm not sure how much the rigidity of the coupe chassis matters. Boxsters (986 chassis) are a LOT cheaper as well. Personally, I would choose the mid engine platform over the 911 chassis, despite the fact that the 911 has a superior multi link rear suspension design.

Why build when you can buy?

It would be a perfect GTS3/4 or ST3 car. just sayin'

KC - I saw your car and it looks pretty cool! Was a little surprised to see stock brakes and KSport coils on it though. Plus I would need to sell my SpecE46 car before I start building another one. It would run GTS4 based on displacement assuming GTS people gave you ok on the engine swap.

Is there anything one can do about the rear suspension layout? I'm seeing Caymans be the preferred choice for GTB over 911 - gotta think there is something to that.

996 are getting older and not competitive in gtb field, maybe 1-2 cars left.

I race both a 986 boxster and a 987 cayman.

Hands down the 987 cayman is better/faster

But 100k-150k vs 40-50k car
