There are certain racers out there that started this way in DE
Went to instruct and on to race
That have never been to a formal school

SCCA required a certified skool back in the day
Plus a scca comp day to get a license...

I guess I just got the old guard Skipoy training and engrained in me
And what I see today at DEs, track days, and races
Blows my mind

Yep, you're old school!

I went to Skip Barber before any of the other schools except Spenard-David and the Canadian Jim Russell satellite at St. Jovite were even started (well, maybe Bertil was teaching at the time, before Dennis' time, IIRC). It was freakin' AWESOME. Being taught by people you read about in Autoweek or On Track magazine was a big deal for me. Peter Kuhn, Bruce MacInnes, Carl Lopez, Harry Reynolds, Mike Rand, Mike Zimicki, all those guys knew more in their little finger than almost anyone I have ever met in a DE and now professional schools and coaches. It was graduate level training, and I hadn't even graduated "high school" driving level yet! The curriculum and the feedback were unparalleled even today...

When I went to racing school, all there was was SCCA.

No PCA CR (eight years later), no BMWCCA CR (ten years later), no NASA (sixteen years later), no EMRA, nothing.

We had to be ON TRACK for six hours, in class for six hours. If we missed ONE minute, we DID NOT PASS. Then we got a novice permit signed off by the Chief Steward and we were on probation for two regional races before we could even get our regional license! It was rigorous and people did "wash out." When I got my SCCA National License, it was one of the proudest days of my life, because I HAD to HAVE a National license in order to teach at SCCA Drivers School. Having been a Divisional Chief Instructor was a great thing, because the curriculum was well vetted and excellent.

It's a shame that SBRS is not what it used to be, but I think everyone who is a serious student of the sport, at any level, needs to attend a professional school of long standing. I'm not talking about Judy Faasst's "experience," I am talking about any of the schools listed as good for a "Full Competition License" here: https://www.scca.com/pages/driver-s-school-w-table

A majority of people who take these schools do not go on to a competition career, but they do graduate with a firm foundation of basic and advanced technique. A platform from which working with a qualified, experienced private coach can really be beneficial.

YMMV...

Kills me every time a see a slow roll back on track from the grass or from off line to rolling back on line

My first experience was at "Bobby rahals track time"
Then "start racing! Kart skool in Orlando
And then onto skippy skool and racing with them and scca

Track days have done a huge thing for involvement in the sport
NASA and other groups really got the track day thing going big and that's awesome
Participation has grown immensely
But the cars speed and capabilities today far exceed what was avail when these groups started out
A track car then was an after market H&R suspension And a K&N air filter

More power means you're just going to hit whatever you were going to hit, harder...

Bruce MacInnes spent the WHOLE DAY on the skid pad at Lime Rock grabbing my pants leg and pulling up whenever I would try and "save it" with power... Saved me a bunch of money over all these years...

Hah! I taught for them the year before Bobby got on board. At Charlotte in the fall of 1987 or 1988. Can't remember. Good program. Like the original Car Guys, Inc. by Kenley Smith.

Yep, all star cast!

Duck is still around. Hope to see him next weekend at Elkhart Lake. He took me for a ride around Road America to put out cones. I learned more in thirty minutes than most people learn in ten years of driving that place. And we weren't even at speed! Special people.

My favorite Duck quote:
