Default Skip Barber 3 day v. use money for more PCA DEs

Been running PCA AX up here in NER/NCR Boston for 3 years (6-12 events per year) along with 2 years of DEs (maybe 10-12 DE days). Great PCA instruction on both.

I have the opportunity to take the Barber 3 day at PBIR this winter, but was wondering if the $4k needed is better spent on more PCA coached DEs in my own car.

From the curriculum there would seem to be some overlap and reinforcement of current skills, but perhaps I could also take a few steps forward.

Thoughts welcome.

If you want to go to a school, I would look at Bertil Roos, Lucas School, or SimRaceway.

Alternatively, you could get setup with some of the local private coaches (Guys like Simon Kirby, Phil Lombardi, or Lee Carpentier) at some of the local events and do some great 1:1 coaching.

1:1 coaching during an open test day (or otherwise open pitlane) trumps any school or solo seat time. You get all of the instructors attention, can ask questions at any point, and can immediately work on their feedback.

So, number one priority is coaching time. Number two priority is seat time. The above gives you ample time of both.

Agreed.

I attended the Skip Barber 3 Day event last year at Road Atlanta. My goals were to get my mind back engaged and opportunity to re-up outdated license after time away. While it met my goal, I could see it not being quite as useful for those who are experienced and current.

There are some solid coaches that frequent this forum that you would probably get more from during an open test day. Peter (Procoach) is one I have known since beginning long ago and respect.

1:1 coaching with a quality pro coach, and many several have been named in this thread, is always the best choice. It has made a huge difference to me.

I've done the Skip Barber 5 days of race school program, and have used pro coaches. I love working with coaches 1:1 but don't feel it was a waste attending the SB programs even with all my DE driving experience and experience with coaching.

There were a few exercises at the school that were only possible in a school setting. Such things as the threshold braking exercises, practice race starts, getting out on the track in the rain to feel how slick the line gets in the wet, etc. plus, it was just a really fun experience. So yes, pro coaching probably trumps a race school, but I'd say do both!

Another voice for 1:1 private coaching. If you have a friend who is interested you could consider sharing a coach for 2 days of back-2-back coaching which IMHO is even more beneficial. Pro coaching turned me from a mid packer to a reasonably decent driver.....

Bondurant has some advanced schools that are pretty 1:1 and have helped a lot of folks.

What's your ultimate goal? I went to BR in order to go racing ASAP. You're expectations may differ.

No interest in racing, just general improvement. Provide a more controlled environment to identify and correct some fundamental bad habits not picked up in HPDE coaching, etc.

If u have never been to a school
Go

Learn more in 3 days than in a year of DE

Coaching is different from instructing

Coaching is optimizing what u know
Fixing small weaknesses
Having a critical eye access

Schools and instructing teach u...
Teach u what u don't know and What u THINK u know

Plus in a DE setting... U learned from a guy who learned from a guy who learned from a guy
And I have seen first hand that none have had proper training...
My 2c
