Agreed. I have been guilty too, and have had straps come loose because of not getting enough wraps. You should have at least 2 full wraps which equates to about 5 to 6 ratchets. My straps are now always tight and it helps to have really good tie downs like Mac's.

I had this problem too:

One other possibility:
Did anyone "help" you load the trailer?
Or were you chatting w a friend during loading?
That's usually when I miss something.

Perhaps. I did have someone come up and ask about the car. But I wasn't in a hurry and waited to finish until after we were done chatting. IIRC I had already strapped the car down and was installing the windows when the guy walked up.

I'm about 95% certain the t-hook that dropped wasn't properly rotated in the slot given that it can happen and I know I didn't check for it. I do know I checked the strap tension just before leaving the track.

I use (AWDirect.com) D-Ring lasso style straps (through the wheel) and have never had a strap loosen up more than one ratchet click on a long tow. They can not possibly come unhooked. I also hook my winch to my front tow hook for a final safety measure should locusts eat my straps on the way... .

Those would appear to me to be a PITA since you always have to feed them into the ratchet every time. Unless I'm missing something here.

?? Takes me a total of about 5 minutes to tie my car down, I don't see it as a huge inconvenience...

You always have to feed a strap end into the rachet. How else do you tie the car down?

I use the same wheel straps, work really well...

I use these on my wheels without a problem

Since the ratchet is fed all I have to do is hook through both d-rings

Yup, I use those too. I guess I never thought about leaving the strap end in the racket mechanism.

So you just release the tension on the strap then unclip from the D rings?

Yup. That way I have the correct length handy whether its F or R.

I use those as well. As long as my car is parked in the same spot on the trailer each time - I never have to adjust my straps. I can tie down in 5 mins.

I've got stop blocks on my trailer, that way I put the car in the same spot every time...
