Mac:
I've not been to CMP before and will be coming down for the Thursday "test and tune" if my schedule clears up. Tow will be about 10 hours I think. How far is it from Jacksonville? It looks just as long.

First race at a track for the first time is virgin on insanity. I was going to wait until next year but I just want to get the first one under my belt.

Mark,

The C 996 has to make 2910. The C 993 RS 2794. We have 2 B cars, a 996 GT2 that raced last year 3175# and a 996TT @ 3395. Last year a D car beat the GT2 in the Sprint race I think that was the GT2 owners first race.

John;

Listen to Bill. He is a walking statistician. Drives a mean car to. You will have fun. This isn't my first race but they are all begun the same way...heart in your throat and lots of noise in your ears! Just remember to have fun and stay on your line (unless of course someone is already in it!!!) I'll be seeing you at the Thursday driver's meeting as an "invited" guest. Email me and I'll give you specifics on how to catch up with me. My tow is only 5.5 hours...not that bad. Better than Atlanta actually.

The FAA uses 6# per gallon as the standard weight for weight and balance calculations for the airlines and all GA Pilots.

C class 996 is 2910# and C 993RS is 2794#. That is as low as you can go. The 996 is 315-325hp and the 993 with a 3.8 is 300. These hp numbers are painting with a broad brush.

I wonder if I could move to C to gain the weight benefits without having to cough up major muhla for a 3.8! It makes sence or not???

I was reading on the 964 board 964 cup cars on dynos stock producing 288hp at the crank... No wonder they are smoking our heavy beasts... It would be nice if somethings would be put in perspective when making a decision to assign a class to the cars...

The gallon weight of xylene is 7.2 #/gal which is basically the gallon weight of gasoline...

jet fuel (6.3 lbs per gallon) is closer in weight to kerosene then gasoline. concur with the 7.2 pounds per gallon -- but it seems to be splitting hairs and a mistake could be very disappointing.

I think I'll just do what Greg does and use 8lbs just to be on the safe side. I doubt at my level if I used 15 lbs it would make much of a difference in my laptimes.

umm.

unless you are able to buy or make 8 or 15 pound per gallon gasoline (that's alotalead.. ) you will be on the safer side to assume that the gas weight is ... say 4 pounds per gallon.

That is, if "on the safe side" means you want to make minimum weight after a race.

that is, in calculating how much weight a certain amount of gas added will add to the total weight of the car, you want to have an error that tends to make the car heavier than your estimate.

sorry to be repetitive, and if you are racing in my class, please feel free to assume that gas weighs 100 lbs per gallon, and therefore a half gallon in the tank at the end of the race will make up for the car being 40 lbs lite when empty.

all best from a pedantic ***,

J

Jerry;

My car is 6 lbs over the minimum with a tank so full its overflowing. I figure I need to add weight since I know when I come off, I'll be under 8 lbs for every gallon of gas I use plus accounting for scale differences I need to add quite a bit of weight to be safe.

John,

as Bill has noted, at this level, weight is moderately irrelevant. With the amount of track time we may have to do due diligence on suspension tuning, more weight may actually help in say... 40% of the cases... i would say a reasonable procedure would be to weigh the car with the minimum amount of gas in it that will keep the fuel pickup from starvation. Add lead per regulations until you are 14.2 lbs overweight (average ambient sea level air column weight per square inch ) and then figure your gallons/10 mile rate , and add that to the car plus a bit for red flags/restarts/false grid delays for each event.

It is now safe to turn off your computer
