I'll be at Palmer for the first time in June with NER. What's available in the local area in terms of food (even fast food), gas, etc.? The closest reasonable hotels I could find were in Sturbridge, so that's where I'm staying.

I think it has tremendous character and will be really nice when the curbings go in and the grass grows...
One thing I don't think I like though is the beginning of that pit wall.

Their 'open lapping' is structured like a DE. Anyone can sign up but they have restrictions on complete newbies.

Their 'restricted lapping' is an open test day with open passing. This requires caged, log-booked car, fire suit, etc.

Good catch. Gives me the creeps when I see that wall's edge pass by. There's also the outside of the turn at 1:20 and more than few places where a naked concrete wall is a potential direct hit which would not go well and could be potentially fatal for the driver. (Concrete is really, really hard.) I would not be opening this track at its current state if I was the owner. IMO, the risk is too high that one unlucky off could put a major damper on the whole project.

Thank you Matt!
I was hoping someone got the joke of the first year thing!
I was there with good bud Bob Scotto and he liked it too!

Wow, I love the flow of that track and all that camber!!!

But holy mother of God, the entrance to pit lane...the end of that wall...at those speeds?

Ouch.

I would like to own a wrecker/flatbed business nearby...

+1 on the flow and +1 on the unfriendly wall. There does not appear to be many opportunities to pass on that track in a racing situation and if you pass on that long straight, you better have it completed before you get pinched into that wall. Yikes!

Thanks roketman and jwasilko for posting.

Chin will be there July 11-12 and Oct 3-4.

Yeah, those water or sand barrels aren't going to help much at those speeds but it looks like a blast! Can't wait to try it.

I agree on the barrels at the start of the pit wall. Check out what Watkins Glen has in a similar spot (after the outer loop). One photo shows where to look and the other shows the 25+ barrels. There are also 12-14 barrels at the pit entrance at the Glen and that is on the inside, not outside of the straight.

Why is that section of guardrail even there? Would seem easy to move it back and make it much safer....

Default Palmer

I've had a number of discussions with the owner and many more improvements are in the works (curbing, tires, etc....) - hopefully sooner than later.

NNJR-PCA will be there on August 28-30 with the 28th for Instructors/Advanced drivers only.

It blocks the hillside, trees, and spectator area.

The Glen made a bunch of changes in that section after last year's NASCAR crash in August.

I think if you miss the very end of the spear, it's better to slide down the armco than to collide with the rounded barrier you suggest. I wouldn't want to hit either, but I'd choose the current layout if I had my druthers. No doubt NASCAR has had their computer simulators all over the possibilities.
