Strip + Cage My 996 GT3 or Trade for 997 Grand-Am?

from what I have observed so far, racing = carnage (sooner or later)
you have a perfect street/track car now that 1) is not easily converted to desired pca class based on mods 2)will lose value when caged/raced 3)will see contact of some form or another
as some have mentioned, pick up a 'cheap' spec box so that 1) the racing costs are as reasonable as they get in club racing 2) you get mid-engine chassis experience before you eventually build the cayman you want 3) you won't lose the resale value on a spec compared to what you would lose on the gt3

Dollar wise, you would likely be ahead of the game keeping the GT3 and buying a SB outright. You could easily spend the cost of a SB getting your GT3 race ready and eligible for a desirable PCA class.

I wouldn't trade especially if the other party wants your GT3 plus cash. You would be getting the short end of the deal. If it was my decision, I would keep your GT3, buy a Spec Boxster or a nice E Class 3.2 Carrera to learn to race in (if you are set on racing a Porsche).
996 GT3 prices are going up so if I had yours, I would keep it. With the 6 Cup gearbox, your GT3 would end up in GTA1. Prepared mods to the gearbox are limited to R&P, but you cannot change the gears.

If it were me? I'd sell the GT3, find a $15K 996 that I can drive on track and daily, and then find a Cayman and start the real build. The path you are currently considering is too expensive and all over the place to get you to your end goal efficiently.

Overwhelming response seems to be to keep the car, and I think I'm headed there too (I'll give it a few more days). This means that after having de-modded over the last few months to sell the car, I'll be re-modding it. Sheesh, that was a lot of work for nothing.
I can get the car PCA-logbookable for minimal expense or intrusion. That would allow me to do a few races and get at least one more year out of my "investment": I put the money in the car, I might as well enjoy it.
Log book will also allow me to self-tech my car for DE (our region does not allow self-tech for a street car, but allows it for log booked race cars, don't ask).
BTW, I enjoy the "if it were me, I would..." comments, that's what I wanted to know

Yeah, I did mention a Cayman, but a cup or even a J-class car could be the goal, so keeping the GT3 is not necessarily way off base. I could keep an eye out for a stock gear box and do a swap to go to J. Or I could get a Spec B along the way. I'm having fun so it's all good.
Thanks again for the input.

Just keep in mind that racing a GT3, Cup or any GT class car will cost you (much) more than racing a spec miata or a spec boxster -- and this is beyond the initial price of entry. Costs grow in proportion with the levels of grip and power.
