Default PFC08 pads chunk missing - safe to use?

Used these PFC08 pads for 3 DE days and while after I took them off last time I noticed on 2 of the front pads a piece was kind of loose. I just put a tiny bit of pressure with my finger and some small chunks fell off. I don't know if it makes a difference but the first two days I used them it was dry, but the third and last time it rained a little at the end so the pads looked a little bit rusty after I took them off.

Are they still safe to use? The rear pads show no sign of this and, other than the pieces that have fallen off, the rest of the front pads feel solid. Have another DE coming up in a week so I'm wondering if they're okay to run with.

I would be less concerned about the small piece from the corner, more concerned about the appearance of the overall surface: what looks like a lot of pitting, inconsistent coloration of the surface. Have these pads been seriously overheated, perhaps? How much depth is left: less than 50%?

The piece missing is fine but they do look weird.

If you're concerned, you can email PFC directly. They have a great tech support department.

Yes, they do. What do the rotors look like?

Wear looks weird....shouldn't be tapered on the ends like that.

Thanks for the replies. The rotors themselves look fine as they're relatively new. As for actual pad depth left, I'd estimate they have around 80% of their original depth. It's actually pretty close to the levels of how they came new. They haven't been used that heavily and never felt like they were fading so I don't think they've been overheated. Stopping power has been very good and consistent when I used them all three times.

Maybe the pictures taken from so close make them appear worse? The pads feel quite smooth along the surface - the pitting and streaks are actually just surface rust since when I last changed them they were wet from rain and I never dried them properly. I'll wipe them down and post up more pics with my bigger camera so you guys can take a better look.

Edit: Just cleaned off the surface rust spots and took more pictures. I'll email PFC and ask as well, but the main thing I'm concerned with besides the missing piece is the faint cracking lines that I see. When I run my finger over it, it's completely smooth, but I can faintly see some cracks throughout the pads. I jacked up the contrast in the pictures to help show them but in person they don't look nearly as obvious.

They look fine in those pics. I wouldn't worry about it.

You'll get some minor pad cracking when running drilled rotors, but those look better than some of mine have. Again, though, PFC knows their product. It might still be worth an email, if only to learn more about your specific set up.

Thanks guys. I emailed PFC and they got back to me very quickly (great customer service as all of you have said). They said the pads look to be in good condition and slight hairline cracking isn't an issue, nor is the small chip.

If they have substantial chunks missing and you're going to use them, keep an extra close eye on them. I had a similar issue with PF08 pads, and they deteriorated rather quickly on track, with larger chunks breaking off, and then the remaining pad wearing quickly.

Quick Reply: PFC08 pads chunk missing - safe to use?
