Kudos to Mercedes for designing the superior product with their split turbo, but from a racing point of view is this what we really wanted? Will the Honda power plant when they return to the sport next season be able to emulate the Merc's split turbo or have they too already been locked into a design.
Power unit (engine and KERS etc) has been frozen since February of this year. After the season it will be opened up again for enhancement purposes, but the general formula will stay the same.

My thoughts are that the Mercs will definitely not win all the races this year. I'm actually surprised at how much Ferrari and RBR have improved since Australia. Remember how RBR said that they just wanted to finish the race in Melbourne? Now they are knocking on the door of podiums and that is with fly away races.

There's a 3 week period before the European leg begins and I still think the RBR has the best aero but is masked by the brute power of the factory Mercedes effort. The Ferrari in the hands of Alonso is much improved and I suspect it will get better.

Title still belongs to Lewis, but the gap will close and be very narrow by the end of this season based on chassis improvements by others and not power units.

I find it surprising that in this day and age Mercedes was the only one to engineer a split turbo design.

I think Ferrari split theirs too, but not as far as Mercedes.

The season is not over, and IMHO conclusions about Vettel should be kept reasonable until deeper into the season. I think the same thing can be said about comparing Kimi and Fred.

McLaren??? Too proud to lower their sponsorship rate, hemoraging cash and going backwards. Hope they get their shiate together soon as well.

Correct. The simplistic view that you can compare drivers in totally different vehicles is just that, simplistic. Put Webber into one of these cars and who knows what might have happened. Not saying he would have done as good a job as Ricci but wouldn't count it out either. He didn't come to terms with the new tyres as well as Vettel did and now Vettel isn't coming to terms with the new era cars. This has happened in all forms of racing through the decades.

Indeed.

I made the comment a couple races ago that Vettel was not figuring out how to deal with the low traction issues compared to Ricci and was ridiculed by a few on this board......
I made a comment last year about how RBR/Vettel were a second a lap faster than the next car, and was basically called a liar by some Vettel fanboys here. After I posted data that corroborated my statement, no apologies or comments. The adoration to that little German kid is strong here. All the more reason to enjoy his shortcomings. "Seb, Ricciardo is faster than you, let him pass."

But how about that team jacket? Nice. Might have to scoop me up one.
Ordered mine yesterday. Getting the garb ready for Le Mans! I'll be there with the wifey and our oldest, cheering on!
