Ridiculous! Guess they have to be "seen" doing this.

It may be, and I do not have any information to support my opinion, that the intent of the checks is to catch "cheater" smog stations - those that auto-pass cars for a bit extra.

If the data gathered on the street does not match the data uploaded duing the most recent station test - and there is a pattern - then there may be a problem with the independent test station network.

Cheers,

Wonder? I don't think they even have a clue . It's Detroit on a mass scale.

The only thing more amusing than imagining them demanding an AWD car go on there, would be someone pulling up a Bugatti or other such beast and shredding the dyno...

Poppycock! All this is is a tax and a state jobs program courtesy of the American people. Nothing more.

There hasn't been a car produced in the last 30 years that won't pass the test. In Maryland they have these huge state run buildings and have hundreds of people with their cars idling in line waiting for their emissions test. The results are such a scam they stopped reporting the actual figures to the drivers. They just make it pass/fail now so the average guy doesn't see how ridiculously low his emissions are and question the need for the test at all. It's obsolete today and cars over 25 years old are exempt. Utter waste of money and time.

And what percent of the driving public is really unbolting and bolting on his/her emissions equipment? I'd be surprised if it was 1/16th of 1%. Those guys are easy to spot btw. Rather than inconvenience or harass everyone why not practice a little profiling and pull over the 19 year old in the hopped up Subby with the tuner shop decals an fart can exhaust. But that just makes sense.

NH has it right. We do the minimum to get the federal money, which means they make sure you're check engine light isn't on and plug in a reader to make sure there are no active codes. If that is ok, you pass emissions.
