Default Hans vs. No Hans Video

I know we've all seen the sled videos, but here is a driver and navigator in a rally car. Check out how far the drivers head moves and the navigator does almost nothing!

This could have saved that 15 year old girl who died on a Florida dirt track this past weekend. Her angle of incidence (from a picture of the damaged car) was the same as Dale Earnhardt's.... Sad... Unnecessary...

Is there a reason the driver was not wearing a HANS?

I hope that driver was ok. He doesn't look it in the video.

And in a totally irreverent and inappropriate thought, am I the only one thinking about the navigator saying "Samir, listen to me. Samir, the course is over there. Samir, I'm begging you..."

From the lack of blood, I'd say no BSF but I'm sure he is hurting.

Good question if directed at the rally driver. Anyone care to comment?

+1. There are still a lot of places that allow you to race in jeans and a nomex jacket.

Dunno where this video's from, but a lot of rally rules strike me as "do what you're comfortable with." I think the US groups are a lot stricter, but yeah--codrivers' shoes are open, I can't remember if gloves are required, etc., etc. Then again, nomex driving shoes aren't the greatest if you're pushing/shoveling the gott dang car out of the mud, either, so that's a trade-off.

TBH, I'm perfectly cool with being a nice little well-protected ball of carbon and nomex in the crapcan, thx. Would probably be even MORE paranoid about that flying through the woods. I'm kind of glad the crapcan series are going towards "no, you really should buy something more than just a stupid foam donut" nowadays, too.

Nope, first thought in my mind was "Samir, you're going to break the car."

Of course, they HAD to do this to a Cosworth :-(

Is it a lemons rally event because coulda swear the fire extinguisher(bottled water) wasn't properly bolted on by passengerside. And driver- wtf was he thinking not wearing some head/neck restraint system since your chance of nailing something head on is fairly high. It woulda been instant death if he nailed a tree or ne fixed object. He didn't look all to well after snapping his neck- that musta hurt. A visit with chiropractor if nothing else is probably what's he's doing now. Mike

That was a relatively slow impact and even in slow motion, his head snaps forward with unusual speed. Scary stuff.
