On-board video

Peter, thanks for sharing a couple of the good - and easier - options.
Can you comment on:
1. Limitations as to data you can get off a 1997 993 - early OBD2
2. How these options compare to a HLT app on a Iphone, with auxilliary GPS
If too mch trouble, will arrange to call you if you prefer.
Cheers!
Matt

I have one, Jerome. A really good solution for basic data AND video in one.
If you have the ability to run the camera off a simple, inexpensive logger like the Solo DL (which works on newer cars, like yours), it's pretty amazing how much better the HD version is.
Field of view is wider, not as tall.
No edge of field distortion, even though the FOV is wider.
MUCH better auto exposure, so you can see inside and outside clearly.
No jitter, vibration or "rolling shutter" effect, like the old one.
The clarity is stunning. You can read larger instruments in the video.
For a couple hundred dollars difference, to me, it's a no brainer! It's like buying and XBOX when you can spend less than thirty to forty per cent more and have a XBOX 360...
Matt, it's REALLY important to realize that, just because there are limitations in the type and amount of data easily accessed (and I stress "easily") from the earlier cars (including your 993), some of these "intelligent video" solutions have MORE than enough information to identify opportunities for improvement. After a great deal of discussion, I sold an EVO 4 and a SmartyCam HD to a 993 driver in the Northeast, not because he'll put in a bunch of sensors right away, but because he now has a foundation that will get him SERIOUS data logging with an easy-to-use, embedded with RPM, lat and long g, lap timing HD video in a tidy, expandable package that he can go as far as he wants with as his skills and experience accumulate.
I think it's a mistake to feel as though one MUST have steering angle, brake pressure or even throttle position to gain incredibly valuable insight in video equipped with speed, g's, track position, lap timing.
More importantly, the ability through the software to compare two vids, side by side, can be of great value. Just seeing the levels of g's, translating directly throttle or brake (and measuring the amount of available lateral grip used) throughout the corner is what helps even the pros the most.
I just got an email from a RL'er that detailed in great depth the challenges he has had with Harry's, from a reliability standpoint and lack of consistency in the data. HLT is great. It's one of the first out there and he's upgraded it tremendously since I first tried it in 2008. I just can't use it, nor can many others, for serious, consistent and useful comparisons and review. The logistics of keeping up with the charging of the phone, the GPS amplifier/mount and interface with a larger screen really seems to get in the way for most people who decide to move up to better, more purpose-built solutions.
More soon.

Having said that - I specified HD in my new car and would be selling the non-HD Smarty if I wasn't offering it with the car.

If you purchase the option...
