A little more 'integrated' by the time the 962 was rolling around.

Which I was lucky enough to spend a little time in.

It was quite cool. I think it was Dave Donahue who drove it around on the Porsche weekend. It has what looks like a 1.5 seater inside...well, a small person plus a small child.

I found out that the 917 was small many years ago, when E-bay was just starting. I saw an item for a 917 Gulf livery decals with a starting bid of $5.00. I though, why not, maybe nobody will see it, I'll win it and hang it on the garage wall. To my amazement, I won it! Unfortunately it arrived in a small letter envelope. It was for a model car.....DOH! My wife saved it and we laugh about it when I find something good on E-bay.

There was a picture many years ago, I think maybe on the cover of Panorama mag, of a 910 or 907 parked directly in front of a transporter. Though I'd seen the cars in person, it was imazing how small it looked in front of a truck ...

At six foot tall, I did not fit in the 917/30.
The drivers of the day must have been much shorter in order to have any roll over protection.
Sorry for the scanned photos, it was 1995.

Mark Donohue was not a large guy ... But also the safety standards back then weren't quite what they are now. I saw the Donohue car on track at the 2001 Rennsport Reunion at Lime Rock. I think it was Roger Penske driving, who is not short, and I was impressed at how far above the roll bar his head extended.

we had the amalfi and almeras 962s big machines. wide. and low and WAY more safe than a 917. the nose cone area was built really nicely and you didnt auto-delete your legs if you hit something head on. the interior was really roomy, all things being equal, and i thought it possessed way more advanced technologies.

ill throw on some photos so you can seee some of the design differences particularly in the nose cone area of the 962 v 917

F1 cars are narrower and longer than they look on TV - and the tires look WAY smaller in person!

All I can say is anyone that had attachments large enough to race one of things must of had to remove them to have room enough to get strapped in.
