"The tire company has used the same P1000 tire compound (formerly DP-I) at Daytona for the past two years without problems, with the only new variables being the increased power and downforce generated by the new-style DPs."

Well, the other biggie is that the cars "fly" when they rotate backwards...
Speculation exists that the new diffuser package captures more air when the car is going backwards and is lifting the rear of the car too easily.
Also, the rear tire cooling that existed before in the DP's is no more (because of the new aero package) and that tire temps are exceeding those from last year by a significant amount.
Glad the sanctioning body is acting quickly. Thankfully, Westbrook walked away from a similar incident that has killed IndyCar drivers... He ALMOST cleared the catch fence, and that would have been terrible if he hadn't!

More insight from the sportscar365 crowd...
"Elkins said that another area they are looking into (besides tire failures), particularly with aero updates introduced to DPs for 2014. Four cars were running with the new diffuser, tunnels and dual element rear wing package issued by IMSA, which had yet to be evaluated in a full-scale wind tunnel until Monday.
“We don’t design these cars to go backwards,” Elkins said. “We got on the phone last night with all of the relevant aerodynamicists that have worked on the project from every aspect, from Ford to Pratt & Miller to Multimatic. We’ve got everybody on the horn and we’re looking through it and seeing where we’re going.
“It is an unintended consequence but I think anything that goes backwards at 180 mph has the potential for doing that. We don’t necessarily know that the diffuser is what caused that but we’re going through and doing some studies on that. We started last night.”

one would think that any wing diffuser or element designed to provide downforce going one direction would have the opposite effect going the other way.

One would think, in a PROFESSIONAL racing series, that would have been done BEFORE the sanctioned, formal winter tests on track began.
Wow. Ready/fire/aim. Well done, geniuses...

NASCAR is looking into it as well...they think it is caused by using fuel injection and independent rear suspension. NASCAR believes these are "devil inspired doomsday devices" and they have decided to penalize all Porsche teams in order to correct the problems. Just glad noone was seriously injured.
