Trailer winches - will I need a roller at the back of the trailer?

Look at Superwinch, Smitty or Warn winches. They make so many models but get one with the highest capacity and a wireless remote for the price you want to pay.

My Trailex has an open floor, so I don't have a rubbing issue. I like the recommendation to use a strip of delrin/teflon on the floor instead of a roller.

Some winches can accept a synthetic rope, some cannot. It has to do with the quality of the barrel of the winch. Synthetic requires a solid barrel, which is on the more expensive models.

+1 for the remote. First upgrade I did when I bought my trailer was to get that for the Superwinch.
My winch has a cable and it rubs the linoleum floor of my trailer and doesn't really mark it at all. I think there is perhaps a momentary rub as the car crests and then it is over. Probably needs longer to create heat and do damage.

I got several years on mine without such precautions. I have the two-piece extended ramps (i.e.: long) and the winch uses a synthetic rope. I'm actually not sure if the rope drags across the floor of the trailer when winching. I've never given it a second thought. No issues so far!

Synthetic rope is a safety thing. If it brakes, it falls to the ground. If wire rope breaks, it snaps back potentially injuring someone or the vehicle. I have synthetic on my rock crawlers and my trailer.
