There is an article where Sean's mother believes it was most likely a stuck throttle, as witnesses saw brakes lights. But the lights are only a switch at the pedal; it doesn't mean the brakes were still working...[/url]
...hope this doesn't turn out to be an ice mode failure...

Its chillingly like a friends crash at Oulton park UK in a 996 GT3.

This video has home truths and nail on the head comments for us all.

it's where the ABS system somehow thinks it's in a slick/icey condition and prohibits braking to the point of non-effect. There have been several crashes in street GT3/RS' due to this. But if the Edwards car was a cup vs. street GT3 converted to track car, then it should not have had ABS... thus it would have been impossible to experience "ice mode". I am sure others here may know more specifics.

Correct - the "Ice Mode" issue is entirely ABS related with race converted street cars that maintain the stock ABS. In essence, the stock ABS is out of its league in certain track situations and the brake pedal goes "hard" and wheels can lock up. It feels like the brake has no effect, but data shows that you are actually still braking but at a reduced level. The only real solution is to install the Bosch Motorsport M4 ABS but that is not allowed in stock PCA Club Racing. "Ice Mode" can sometimes be driver induced with a quick initial stab to the brake pedal at initial application or induced at the initial brake onset with significant lateral g's present. This is probably way more info than what you needed but the issue is dear to my heart. I had my first ever (!) track offs at the NJMP Club Race this year due to ice mode - scary!

Early (996) cups use a GT3 based ABS that have the same tendancies. I found out stabbing the brakes at the end of a bumpy straight and driving off into the dark at a buck thirty...fortunately I had 800' of paved runoff. Afterwards "discussing" it with the mech: "Oh yea, that happens, just let off the brake"... Not intuitively what you do when faced with that scenario. I now react when it happens and am much softer on initial application to avoid it. But without having had experienced it or someone new to the car I couldn't imagine the implications facing a concrete wall. Purely rash speculation, but a foible of the early cup...

Most 996 Cups have a motorsports-derived ABS system, not a street ABS. AFAIK, the motorsports ABS (which is pretty fantastic) is not susceptible to ice mode. But I could be wrong...
