We are entered in an event down here called World Time Attack.
http://www.worldtimeattack.com/
It is the largest event of this kind on the planet. While I realise that this is not true door to door racing, it is still racing in the manner that e.g. Hill Climbs are considered racing. Rather than bang fenders, you race against the clock. The top cars in this field are VERY fast. They would leave a Cup car in their dust and would also trounce an Aussie SuperCar V8 in qualifying trim on sticky slicks. These TA cars are only permitted to run on Yokohama AO50 R spec rubber to add to the mix!
For some reason only known to the organisers there is a rule setup that bans any rear engine car with 6 cylinders or more. So I take this as a form of inverted snobbery and perhaps when they first started this event down here in 2007, they were genuinely nervous about being beaten up by Cup Cars and other 911 variants. However now there would be no contest unless someone built a ground up forced induction Cup Car. It's a pity that this isn't allowed and perhaps it will be in the future. For now we have the sole Porsche entrant throughout the history of this event.
We have only just got the car ready a few weeks ago and have done 2 shakedowns thus far. The car has proven to be quite a bit faster straight out of the box than we were expecting and you can tell that the pit telegraph has spread the word. What is essentially a field that is 99.9% Evos, Nissan GTR's, Sylvias, RX7's, WRX's etc has been surprised to see this car suddenly emerge from their left field and perform very well so far. As this is our first real crack at this event we didn't expect to be competitive. The idea was to soak up the atmosphere and have some fun doing it. There are 4 classes and we're in the 3rd fastest. The fastest of the cars in our class should be down right around the 1:30 mark which is equivalent to a Pro in a well prepared 997 Cup Car. Open class can't have pro drivers in there either. I am hopeful that we might get down somewhere between the 1:30 and 1:35 mark. As we haven't tested on this track with the car we don't really know. They seemed to think our car will be one to watch out of the 40 cars in our class. We will be giving away 400+ hp, don't have ABS, don't have fancy billet Sequential gearboxes, don't have all wheel drive, don't even have a diffuser...but we will be having fun!
We currently have been testing at about 500bhp. We have approx 575bhp available and the car weighs just over 2500lbs with fuel. Quite swift it is.

The event is attended by many thousands of spectators who are allowed full pit access and also can peruse the vendor exhibits. While not shown on TV (yet) the live results broadcast on their website will be followed by quite possibly hundreds of thousands of fans worldwide. So while this format is in it's infancy it is growing a large band of loyal and enthusiastic fans. Sure, it's JDM-centric but a lot of time and money is being put into some of these cars and with more relaxed rules in some cases they're proving to be very fast and interesting cars.
What is also a bit of fun is that the 944 doesn't have much of a profile down here, let alone something as modified as ours. The organisers and media have taken a shine to this car and it will appear in magazines and online sites such as Speed Hunters. Funny when you see how they are viewed as the poor cousin in the Porsche community. Nevertheless, we hope to represent Porsche with some pride and hope that the rules change soon to allow all cars including rear engine Porsches. I know this format isn't for everyone and won't get much traction in here, but it was suggested I post a thread just the same. :-)

Thanks guys. Appreciate it.
Interestingly on the wing. We were advised by a lot of people that it was too much. Would create too much drag and overslow the car. It could all be true as we haven't tested it without, however we appear to be pretty quick in a straightline to the naked eye when watching it during testing with other high performance cars (OZ Supercar V8's included). Of course that's a subjective statement. The wing is designed by Simon McBeath who has a monthly column in Racecar Engineering. He has also been consulting us on matters Aero since I don't have a spare wind tunnel in the back yard. We added a few degrees of rake to the smaller 2nd element and gained a decent improvement down the straight also. Based on the added grip on the preceding corner but good to know that it's showing quantifiable improvements with downforce AND speed. The downforce was measured at over 500lbs on the main straight too. We have suspension pots for this. The car is running a multitude of sensors into the Motec M400 ECU.
The other great thing was that with a build like this you expect things to go wrong during the shakedowns. You are usually in the pits more than on the track. Hardly a spanner needed to be touched on either test day. A testimony to the great work and preparation from the shop it's at. When you look at how much work went into just the ducted cooling system that is a great bonus not to have minor or major issues during testing.
Lastly, here's a short hand held video showing the car at speed. Sorry about the shaky quality but you get the idea. It's a straight through 3" system with no muffling or silencing. We may need to do something about that. Not the prettiest sound that a GT3 might make but I've kinda got used to it and think it sounds a little ominous to match the Mad Max look.![Stick Out Tongue](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif)
Even on this short track we were 1.2 sec's quicker than the 997 Cup in the garage beside us. Both driven by amateurs.

Thanks Mike.
That's just a test track. The real track is quite a bit longer and faster.

Yes that was a very hard hit. Bit of a known result on the track on the exit of T5.
Check out the inboard winning lap (2nd video) just after that same Turn 5. That is Insane!! The Japanese guy (Under Suzuki) in the S15 must have needed a suit change after that! Clearly he was in a world of his own. The in car driver has done more laps around that track than the rest of the field combined...well possibly. So he was into it and not backing off. He broke the record and won the event with a 1:24.8!! Just a reminder, the fastest Cup cars do it in the 1:30-1:31 bracket, on sticky Michelin slicks.
As far as our event went...well, great to compete and be a part of it. Unfortunately we were chasing problems for the few days preceding it and then into the event itself. We had to retire from the event which was a 2 day affair on the 2nd morning without doing a run. Failed turbo due to some bolts backing out. Shame as the 2nd morning was when everyone went their fastest. We should have got into the 1:33's but only managed a 1:35 flat and this was while not running with as much power as we'd have liked and also blocked as you can see in the outboard video. Unfortunately some people don't use their mirrors enough as evidenced by the blocking and plenty of Oil downs. Frustrating to say the least! The fastest car in our class was a highly modified Nissan GTR32 with possibly over 800whp. He toasted us on the straight but data showed us to be quicker than him around the twisty bits. Some consolation.
