944's are quite a bit more forgiving than 911's when the out of shapeyness happens.

OP, what is your reason for waiting 3 -5 years? If it is just experience you can get the basics in one solid season of DE's. I actually finished my qualifications the day before our local club race my first year on the track. Don't be afraid to jump in if you like driving. Also, you will learn some bad habits if you DE too much.
As far as cars for $30K, I believe you can buy a respectable SPB for close to that. You need to realize your cost to run most cars is between $1,500 and $4K per weekend depending on many factors. For me it is having lots of cars to run with so you can get better. If you are 1 of only a few cars it is kinda boring. I am jumping back into SPB because I can run it in NASA and PCA so it really opens up my options and I don't have to travel out of state for all but one race like PCA.
Good luck and have fun with it!

Says who? He's got years of experience racing bikes and is probably pretty quick right out of the box. Besides, if you can afford it and have the means to tow it to the track why not get a something with the safety that a track only car provides?
