Racing a Porsche... Why did you choose what you race?
So I am at that awkward stage in life... Track cars, instructing, Chumpcars... Just joined NASA. So why do you race the car you race in the class you are in. I am all ears... Shopping race cars and losing my mind...

Picked an 80s 911 because that's the car that got me interested in sports cars, running with the PCA gives me plenty of D and E class cars to run against and I love the handling characteristics of a rear engine car

Mike,
I was looking for something affordable so I went with a Datsun to vintage race. If I was going to run with NASA I'd probably get a BMW, I'm know I'm a heretic.

If you are going to work on it yourself, having a sports racer or formula car where the body work can be completly removed is quite nice. For some reason BMW's are the biggest PITA to work on for me.

<smart a$$>Racing a Ford Escort FWD with the renowned ultra-high performance CVH 1.9 liter motor is supposed to be very rewarding. </smart a$$>
Whilst not Porsche specific, I’ve found racing an early model Miata very rewarding in both sprint and endurance racings at the club level. If I were to race a P car, then Spec Boxster. Both of these classes let you focus on the driver skills Vs the car performance capability.
Hope this helps and would love to race with you again

I chose my '73 "RS" as I always competed in 911's and it seemed a fun, affordable car. Then I chose a stock GT3 cup as that's the best way to compare your times to the pros, as we had a lot of pro drivers around running the same cars so we always knew what the ultimate lap times were.

I chose the 944 because it was the most affordable way to experience the way a Porsche talks to you - steering, brakes, etc. Then I had the funds to race more, and hang out with great people more often - which is what it is really all about. The Spec concept also provides a good measuring stick of your abilities, and progression. Never underestimate what racing will really cost
Finally I can race under one ruleset in NASA PCA, and vintage - which makes for more options, and I've tried them all.

I wanted a DE car that I can race in a competitive class vs. a race car that I would terrorize DE events in Given family and work commitments, I know i would be doing more DE events than races. Thought long and hard about Cup Cars and even PPI''d a couple but ended up building my Cayman H class PCA car...now that I have it close to dialed in, it is tons of fun and relatively cheaper than Cups. Car is fast enough and it is really a hoot pulling away from GT3's during DE's. I am learning the art of racecraft as well as really wringing out as much as I can from the platform, shooting for class records and some wins along the way.

My decision was based on what my buddy's were running (944). If racers in you area are running the same model, you get the advantage of a built in knowledge base, plenty of spares at the track and extra hands when you need them.

Built up a track RSA and then a cup replica out of another RSA because I love the 964, bought a 944spec because I wanted a not too precious racecar to go W2W with the guys and mix it up, bought the cup to do the bucket list tracks and the specboxster as a natural progression from the 944 that has some similarities as the cup to race W2W...thinking what's next but a SWB sounds like fun and my original RSA is going full race...each does something different for me, some about the challenge, some for the competition, and some because I just love the car, just have to figure out what turns your crank...

I chose SP2 (944) because the large class has a lot of competition, the running costs are low, the cars are pretty cheap, and I have a lot of 944 knowledge and spare parts.
When I was an intermediate DEer, I wanted the fastest car I could afford. But now that I do more of the club racing, I want the most competition - even if it means driving a slower car.
